Maybe Kim Campbell can finally leave behind the embarrassment of being Canada's shortest reigning prime minister.

It’s funny how US politics are usually vastly different from what’s described here, but the 2024 election and Biden ended up having some pretty stark parallels

As an American, the idea of non-set election dates always throws me off

To be fair, we vote for MPs, not Prime Ministers. So although we know who the leader of the party is at the time of voting, we aren’t actually voting for that person. We’re voting for the party representative in our riding.

Brit here, I have to say, we just went through all of this mess a year ago a, with first Liz Truss (only voted by the Conservative membership) and then Rishi Sunak (Only voted by Conservative MPs.) A similar thing happened in 2008 with Tony Blair resigning, leaving Gordon Brown to lose the 2010 general election (Though not in as a dramatic way as Sunak did, or what the Liberals are expected to lose in the upcoming election) Regardless of whichever party is in power, it always leads to either nothing happening, or everything that the public does not want just for pure self-interest.

The UK has seen similar changes in leadership in the last eight or so years. The UK Conservative Party selected Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak as midterm replacement Prime Ministers. May and Johnson retained power after general elections. Truss, as we all remember, crashed and burned after the shortest premiership in UK history. Sunak lost last year's general election, which is probably going to be the fate of Trudeau's successor.

I agree that not having any kind of recall / impeachment mechanism for the Prime Minister is not good. It's an underlooked missing feature of Canadian democracy.

For a country that makes it whole identity "We're not America", they sure do act like "America, but every province is economically Mississippi". I feel for you JJ, I want the best for our northern brothers.

As much as we Aussies complain abt having so many PMs (5 in 10 years at one point), having a method of leadership spills or challenges from within the party is so important for keeping things fresh and the leader accountable to more people. It’s probably the most underrated feature of our (or other Westminster countries’) democracy

I really wish American news media whould bring JJ on instead of people like Kevin o'leary or jordan Peterson

lots of Albertains were complaining that Danielle Smith wasn't elected... until she was. People care way more about voting for political parties than for individual politicians.

It's interesting to hear J.J. describe proroguing parliament as "mandatory vacation" for members of parliament. It perhaps reflects the attitudes of members of parliament towards the idea of time off that they didn't truly want, as they know they have much work to do.

As an American, I have to ask. Why would anyone want to be the next liberal prime minister? Especially because the liberals are supposed to lose to the conservatives. Does the person just want to say he or she was once prime minister?

I wonder if they’ll choose another woman so she can be our second shortest sitting prime minister 🤦‍♀️

The fact that canadian citizens dont know when their national election will be is crazy.

I can appreciate most of JJs criticisms of the system, but as a fellow Canadian they sound a bit nitpicky compared to what's going on in European parliamentary systems right now. Several European countries are struggling to form stable governing coalitions due to the popularity of new nationalist parties in systems of proportional representation. If a three-month prorogation is all it takes to reset the longest minority Canadian government in history, followed by a free and fair, election, I'd say that's a good thing. For all it's faults, our system has been getting more democratic over its 150+ year history, and that's not something most countries can say. Hell, just look at South Korea if you want to see a country in a serious political crisis right now.

Meanwhile the governor general gets to sit back, laugh, and collect free taxpayer money.

Political parties in Canada have too much power. They undermine how MPs are supposed to represent their constituency, not their party.
