The World Baseball Classic, or the WBC, is an international baseball tournament that was sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) from its 2006 inception until 2013, and then currently by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), in partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB).
The tournament is the first of its kind to have the national teams of all WBSF's member federations feature professional players from the major leagues around the world, including the MLB. In addition to providing a format for the best baseball players in the world to compete against one another while representing their home countries, the World Baseball Classic was created in order to further promote the game itself around the globe.
The WBC previously coexisted with the Olympic baseball tournament and the Baseball World Cup as IBAF-sanctioned tournaments - but baseball is removed from the Olympic programme after a decision by the International Olympic Committee in 2005; thus making Beijing 2008 the last time for baseball to be featured as a full medal sport, while the last-ever men's Baseball World Cup was taken place in 2011, and was then discontinued in 2013 after an MLB suggestion to reorganize the international baseball calendar; WBSC accepted the suggestion after an executive meeting, giving the "world champion" title for the WBC winner, on the condition that the Classic should have direct qualifications and follow international anti-doping rules.
It is reminiscently modeled after the FIFA World Cup of football/soccer and is organized in large part as a response to the IOC's decision to axe baseball from the Olympics (the sport eventually returned in Tokyo 2020 - but it was only added specifically for that Games), and the tournament has grown into a major sporting event worldwide. In fact, the final series in 2006 and 2009 are ranked among the highest-rated sporting events in Japanese TV history.
