Sandy - really impressive REAL time sound effects to his idioms!!

Interesting.

Glad to see people looking at unique and plausible solutions. Not sure if any of these things can salvage some sort of future for humanity, but it's worth exploring and trying.

Thank you for the videos that you make, I really enjoy the the graphics in the introduction. I like your videos and, also, Paul Beckwith videos too. I just wish more people would be better informed, but unfortunately, there are so many people who are Climate Change skeptics, I get very discouraged. I have friends and family who don't believe in the dangers of Global Warming and I wish people would realize how catastrophic it can be. Thank you again for the work you do.

About time peak oil came into the discussion. Way past due is the truth. People can deny climate but when they know they won't have ANY STUFF maybe they might start caring. Fracking sidelined the the discussion for twenty years, and now the dependency of society on oil not simply the use of oil becomes the MAIN ISSUE! As it should!

Why aren't more people commenting on Simons' statements. It seems like everyone accepts everything he says as the truth, without questionning. On his websites, he says he accepts criticism, which I've tried to do, but he has never responded. I base much of my understanding about our energy systems on what Simon presents, but there are several points in which I do think he's not presenting things in an unbiased way.
As we reduce our fossil fuel dependance, we also reduce our energy needs bigly. I've made a rough calculation, and we could reduce our needs by 2/3. This is Degrowth. Period. When Simon talks about energy needs for the future, what is he using as his target goal?
I have to question his discussion about Hawai'i. It has the highest energy costs in the US, and it has the highest insolation. And the government has put disincentives on solar power! I call those externals. Solar is too variable? Grid scale batteries will help that crash. I often use the 100 MWh battery in Australia as an example. In one year it saved consumers between $95 and $110 million. Hmm, that also means a bankster lost $95 to $110 million. I'm beginning to see a problem, and it doesn't have to do with the grid. Sandy and Simon discussed a power outage in NY where Sandy lived. Why don't they have a grid scale battery as a backup system? They don't have to be lithium, FYI.
I don't believe solar farms are the answer. Rooftop solar and battery storage would help Hawai'i go a long way to solving a major problem. They should also incorporate community wind power. The wind industry has allowed corporations to take over their goals, and cities and the citizens have suffered. Banksters love it though.
I also question Simon's statement about electric trucks. Should we make every truck an EV? Should we make every truck run on diesel? 110 million barrels a day, and we're in Peak Oil. So we really don't have a choice. Start making electric trucks now, and let's see how the future pans out. And electric buses, farm and construction equipment. Whoever starts will have a head start in an uncertain future. BAU is our other possibility.

"Phasing out trucks is taking 80% of the energy post-fossil fuel."
Can we have more details, please? I agree that we need to find a solution for about 5, 000 people. If they have some electric trucks and construction and farm equipment, that would be to their benefit. They can then present the findings to the survivors among the rabble.
I've noticed a pattern about the different solutions. If we carry on BAU, then we keep fracking and tarsanding. This requires at least 7 times the resources and energy of conventional oil, and if we don't change...more than 100 millions of barrels each day. BAU.
Simon discussed thorium reactors and ammonia under very high pressure. But when they talk EV, everyone says "mining bad". This is not a topic of discussion with other systems. BAU.
Simon also mentioned that we probably passed Peak Oil 5 years ago, but it didn't present itself as a classical scenario of Peak Oil cuz shit happened. Maybe that shit happened cuz that's how Peak Oil happens. Read my other comment about the financial system. $1 Trillion a day for the financial system since 2019. Or more.
Maybe we shouldn't be a gold backed currency, but a hemp backed currency.

If you listen to Nate Higgins closely he makes it clear that we can continue on burning fossil way beyond peak oil, he calls it the Mordor economy. Coal gasification is terrifying when you think of the consequences. I think fossil fuels are a huge blind spot for most environmentally conscious people because they focus on the alternatives.

I love the idea of working towards a better future but I haven't seen anyone talk about education. We are continuing to train people to work in a failing economic system. We need to establish schools where people can learn to cut ties with globization and consumerism. You can't expect people to abandon the system they depend on when they don't have the tools to survive without it.

You can release as many studies as you want on energy (and people have been doing that for decades) but that doesn't matter when people have no ability to establish new energy systems.

As it currently stands we train people to work towards a Mordor Economy but most everyone who understands the real problems are self educated folks or academic outcasts.

It's not too different from your idea, just that the focus is shifted away from appealing to existing power structures and instead empowering individuals with the tools they need for self reliance.

The solution is not "Empowerment of women". The solution is equality between men and women, reproductive education, and acceptance of birth control.

19:10 Not 300 bar tank. Ammonia is liquid at 10 bar (at 25 C). Alternatively, if cooled to -33 C it is liquid at atmospheric pressure. This is how large amounts of ammonia are stored.

I am thinking there are too many people digging, burning and discarding too much stuff in a place that only has a limited amount of space for such overuse. I know I may be the only person who is saying such nonsensical shit, but it has been on my mind.

My beloved HS Chemistry and Physics teacher (CA teacher of the year, actually) both had a bumper sticker with that saying/pun as well as said it all the time, as has become my won’t; “you’re either part of the solution or you’re part of the precipitate!”

Simon said that the powers that be do not expect to change and want the Venus Project elsewhere.
Business As Usual.
Uhh, aren't all these conversations because of BAU?

Anyone know why ammonia could prove better than a hydrogen fuel cell?

Its always nice to see these conversations when i can watch something and not get an ulcer.

I think Simon doesnt take himself too seriously which makes it better

Lots of talk about Degrowth, but we also should talk about Regrowth.
Actually degrowth is a train that left the station 2 decades ago. Simon showed that our Fourth Industrial Revolution to the Zombie Fuels in 2005 required a seven fold increase of everything. Infrastructure, energy as well as electricity. I'm still waiting for calculations on the millions of tons of toxic chemicals required for fracking and tarsanding. But also money.
Financing a frack site requires a 30 year ROI bank loan. And it is worthless after 18 months. So they sold it to another bank or a pension fund. Funny that the 2008 financial crisis was blamed on homeowners. Ha. Ha. And the beatdown goes on, and keeps going on. Remember the REPO market crisis in 2019? They were giving $1 Trillion a day to the financial markets, and then they stopped talking about it.
We need to regrow a financial market. And I agree with Simon that it's no good to save the drowning billions, start a community with about 5, 000 and see if it works. I have one question for Simon and his calculations about the feasibility of different sources. Are you using the present day needs or are you calculating for an economy without Zombie Fuels? Just by stopping fossil fuel use is degrowth, and we don't need to replace 100% of our present needs, n'est-ce pas?
I've established a network of hundreds of Swiss farmers and talked about hemp with them. They are all more than ready to start planting, but they want a guaranteed market. I also talked with professional schools. They said yes...in 2017. For two days. And then I was persona non greta. When I tried to talk about it again last September, those young'uns looked at me like I was a ghost. Western Society will never move away from plastics.
I've been looking to start a new community for decades. I followed Transition Villages but they were never serious. I can't grow anything, I kill cactii. But I am very good at treating farmers, and other hard workers, so I have my therapeutic skills to offer to a small community. And some ideas.
