But your overcoat on the picture is lighter in colour than the suit you were underneath? I don‘t understand the rule then „it should be darker, the more it moves away from the body“? That would also mean, if you wear a cream white suit, there is no possibility to wear a tie other than a white tie?

As a musician, i think dark shirts are a proper choice for music performances, in social events. The idea is to not stand out, the party guests, in these kind of events, are the center of attencion.

You had me in the first half - but it doesn't really hold for an overcoat. The logical conclusion of this advice is to only wear a jet black overcoat, and most sartorial advice is against only wearing black overcoats.
