Went to school with Stamper's son, Joe - got to play Goldeneye 007 at their HQ in Twycross before it was released!!! I just remember the black and red debug menu you could pull down with the shoulder buttons and getting stuck in the sniper tower's geometry in the first level :) best gaming memory ever, still got the little badge they gave me. It was his birthday party! Lucky kid.

1990s : What if I put 10 free games, for fun, in the game I'm developing ?
2010s : What if I put 10 DLC in my incomplete game, for making more money ?

I'd love to be such a skilled programmer that I could write an emulator for an 8 bit computer as a "side project" during the development of a 3D FPS on a new hardware platform.

Definitely had to re-read the title a few times on this one.

To unlock the Emulator in Golden Eye you have to push the Truck infront of the SS Anne with a Level 100 Mewtwo using Strength

I was very happy in 1983 when I got my 48K Spectrum, especially when I eschewed my brother's 12inch B&W portable in our bedroom and went downstairs to sample the delights of Atic Atac on our colour Hitachi through RF. Yes, you could actually see what colours the keys were instead of interpreting 50 shades of grey (well 3). Then later a mate up the road lent me his 'big box' Sabre Wulf for the weekend. He was not pleased when I finished it that Sunday and mentioned the message at the end (featuring Underwurld). Now I have all the big box games in a cabinet (though they have faded?!?!??!). I was also in seventh heaven in 98 when Banjo Kazooie came out and the colours spilling off our Sony Nicam CRT were a living room-filling joy to behold. Halcyon days. Shame these days are over. Oh well, just going to have a quick go on Conker Reloaded. The smell of opening Knight Lore, Alien 8 etc. I remember it so well.

I have never heard someone refer to the C-buttons as a yellow D-pad.

"Up on the yellow dpad"
Y-You mean "C-up", right? Right?! Have I been calling it the wrong thing all these years?

The ultimate Easter Egg! Doesn't sound like a mistake to me. I think it was left on purpose so that data archaeologists would uncover it years later. And what a great secret to have over a big company like Nintendo. Great story MVG.

Next episode: the secrets of Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64.

That’s ironic. Rare was frustrated with Nintendo financially. Gets bought by Microsoft, and basically shelved. Hindsight and all that.

On the Amstrad copyright issue, Alan Sugar ordered that the ROM images required for Amstrad CPC and Spectrum emulation be freely available to the public away back in the 90s.

This means that had Rare did a little bit of research, they could've used the Spectrum kernel without issue - at worst they could have given Alan Sugar a wee phone call just to get an extra official OK on having it in a commercial product.

Wait you're telling me that more games I can play on Goldeneye?!
Yells at brother from across the house: "PULL OUT THE 64!!! WE'RE PLAYING GOLDENEYE. NO ODDJOB"

I can't believe how long it took people to find this. I remember people doing all sorts of elaborate GameShark hacks back when the game was new.

Having worked and shipped commercial software, what happened was:

Beta cartridges were made, QA aproved everything, then the plan was going to remove the emulator and all other related code, and this was decided to be extremely dangerous as the recompiled code might end up on a different memory chip, adding any kind of bug subtle enough you won't pick it if you don't do a full QA run, and that is basically duplicating efforts.

A Manager took the decision of "OK let's go GOLD, hide everything and please touch the minimum possible amount of code to not break anything for gods sake".

Hopefully with the recent C&D of Goldeneye 25, they're gonna resolve the rights issues between MGM/Danjaq/Eon, Nintendo, Microsoft and Rare and have the Xbox 360 port released on PC, PS5, XBSX and Switch.

Take the time to think about the fact that microsoft have the rights for Banjo Kazooie, Battletoads, Killer Instinct, Conker, Perfect Dark and Sabre Wulf but the Xbox series X will be launch with little to non exclusive launch games, let that sink in. The fact that characters like Banjo-Kazooie, Conker and the Toads are not the main xbox linked IPs is baffling, Killer Instinct had the potential to be the xbox Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter/Tekken but greed had to prevail.
