The problem with Tokusatsu is not the heavy promotion of toys. The true problem is that BANDAI DIDN'T MAKE A VISTAMP BASED OFF OF KAMEN RIDER SHIN.

Toys were never the problem. The problem is when writers can't incorporate the toys into their stories.

Honestly i love the toys of tokusatsu. It's what makes them unique. It's just not the same without noisy toys shouting at you while transforming y'know

I think the real reason Tsuburaya went full on toyetic is to recoup the money they've spent on the decades-long lawsuit against Chaiyo

I've just gotten into Gundam and I think this is applicable to that franchise now. Sometimes the "selling toy" aspect can be obvious (when a suit gets replaced/upgraded too early, or the entire Build franchise), but I think it's great to have some attachment to the Mobile Suits and have the model kits displayed on my desk. Like the Witch From Mercury series for example. I wasn't sold on the Darilbalde at first, but episode 3 made me appreciate its cool points and want to purchase it.

I really do like the Tokusatu toys, because they're practically Show accurate. They make you feel like you actually have the item from the show. I would be lying if i didn't crack a smile getting my hands on a gimmick i thought looked cool.

I like it when gimmicks are made in some ways that don't make me feel like I'm buying hollow pieces of plastic just to unlock what I already have. Like the gashats.

Hearing Marcos say "a brand new toy" feels a bit nostalgic for some reason.

Wonderful video! Really loved the shoutout to the Galaxy era of Ultraman since its my favorite era of the franchise in both toys and story.
The statement about the showa riders legacy items hurt and hit me close to home lmao, but I'm happy with Revice they made an effort sorta lmao.
Really enjoyed it!

Thanks Marcos, this video was great and I for one enjoy collectable gimmicks from Sentai, Rider, and Ultra, they make the show more fun since the hero gets more power and thus EVOLVES the fighting (seriously compare Ultraman Z's fighting styles from all the way from Alpha Edge to Delta Rise Claw), and regardless of how gimmicky Toku can be, I still love it

buying toku toys and merch is the same as buying any kind of anime or comic merch. or for those less cultured sports memorabilia its just to show love for what you like

Love how Kyuranger kind of took the micky with it's Bingo wheel, Japanese parents must HATE "A new collectable toy/gimmick EACH YEAR" though

One of the 'problems' I have with toku is that starting with heisei phase 2, there has been a more heavy focus on the toy collectibles, with recent years having a boom in the amount of drivers in the show just to have more drivers. Although I do love that there has been support with missing items recently with Ex-Aid and Build, for as much flack as I give Bandai, they've also upped the quality in the drivers and I'll still keep buying it all (not the CSM though(yet)).

Personally coming from an American viewer that grew up around Power Rangers and honestly Dragon Knight (yes not Ryuki 😭) I was never bothered by all the product placement and now being older and watching Kamen Rider and some Super Sentai I still don't mind some things I expect like all the cliche getting a power up out of nowhere or a beserk form they learn to control to me it's all just toku charm, with some of my favorite Heisei era season being W, Gaim and Build ad well as Zero One and Geats in Reiwa I'm totally down with the gimmick toys although rip my wallet but I'm closing in on getting all my Zero One stuff I wanted and going to look towards Geats now 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Tokusatsu is great in spite of it's toys. When I was watching Kamen Rider OOO with friends they made the observation that it was ironic that certain episodes have an anti-greed and anti-corporation message in a series made to sell you things. I like to think of it instead that the people working on the show care so much about making a show with good morals that they don't care if it runs contradictory to the supplemental material and merchandising.

As someone(finishing) a degree in Marketing, I think Tokusatsu is a great example of how a franchise can be both wonderful story wise, yet also marketable enough for the suits to be appeased by profits. I have never really been bothered by this mindset, most likely because I've grown up liking shows such as justice league and samurai jack that sold toys but were also still great as stories.

I do however hate hearing about shows getting cancelled because the "wrong demographic" bought the toys. I think the suits should focus on making money and let the creative run wild. I am arguably telling myself that, considering my career.

My friend asked me about toku the other day and I don't feel like telling him I just pointed him to your channel

The tokuboomers as what Marcos refer to are genuinely one of the WORST things to get into this small community, like toku fandom are already small and these assholes just came in and point fingers and harass people who likes certain things that aren't the 90s kamen rider not knowing how much toei just do not care about the 90s rider much other than Amazon, ichigo, black and that's it

Our community is so small and these toxicity are genuinely making the community more unwelcoming than it seems

Personally I really like the full bottles. I didn’t really pay attention to the full bottles till I realized b they had toys. Like watching build I completely forgot the toys.

Every media exists to sell you something, toys or otherwise. Tokusatsu is made to sell toys, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is made to sell toys, Transformers, He-Man; even the first Iron Man movie was picked to use Iron Man because that's the toy kids said they'd like to have most. There is nothing wrong with that; though it can get a bit annoying when a show introduces a new form for the first 17 episodes mostly to sell toys, or 9 different belts. I have a lot of merch of my favorite seasons of these shows and I don't regret it and I only buy them when I have the money for it. My worst problem is running out of space to display them.
