SSA's Updates on Implementing WEP & GPO Repeal

I called SS in January to make an appointment to apply for survivor benefits. I applied on February 7 via phone call. My husband passed away in 2017. Had to take in my marriage license & his death certificate. I was told I should be receiving the lump sum money & then my updated monthly benefit in April. 🎉🎉🎉

Saw on another channel that SSA posted how many payments they sent out 2/25 which was first day. Said they would send payments every day (not sure about weekends) until finished. Wish they would explain what order they are issuing payments. For example, my check comes out 3d Wed of each month, so would my retro pay be issued around that time or is there some other factor.

I received an email from SSA telling me that I would be receiving an increased benefit and a payment for retroactive benefits.

I received a letter from social security last Wednesday confirming that I was now eligible for benefits but it did not give me an exact amount. I was previously reduced to $0.00.

Payments in social security are based on your birthday. If you were born before a certain year, its the first of the month. Then after that on Wednesdays, like I was born in 1947 on the 17th. So my pay date is the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

My wife got her GPO (removal) back pay. It was right at $20, 000.

I looked on my SS login. It shows amount change in the verification award letter. Not received anything yet from SS

On June 13th the SSA announced that they have completed 97% of the claims of those people affected by the SSFA.

Hopefully we will be grandfather into anything in the future.We have had to fight this decades and finally won it.

For those that were reduced to $0 or less, and have just applied for spousal benefits as of January 2025, SSA is only allowing retroactive payments for 6 months, back to July 2024, because that is the current amount of time is allowed. This is contrary to the fact that the law is retroactive to January 2024.
