Bozeman city commissioners are set to make a decision on whether to adopt a controversial new urban camping ordinance. Ahead of that decision, members of Bozeman Tenants United spoke out against it.

“The way that the ordinance has been brought to the City Commission has been incredibly short-sighted and undemocratic,” said Olive Nakano Sohn, an organizer with Bozeman Tenants United. “The city manager hasn't consulted experts, unhoused folks or service providers.”

The city’s current ordinance regulating urban camping bans those experiencing homelessness from camping in the right-of-way unless there is no available shelter space, and stipulates that under those circumstances, vehicles must not remain on the same street for more than 30 consecutive days, with violators subject to civil penalties and fines.

The proposed ordinance seems to still allow folks to live this way if they can demonstrate that they have no other option (via permits) and basic good behavior. Asking them for minimal accountability in exchange for living on public property seems like a pretty fair deal. For someone working, like the person highlighted making $22/hr, the permit fee should be a non-issue.

I sympathize for the folks in the motorhomes. I also think there is a reality that is not going to go away. It’s simply to expensive to live there. The only real option is to find a city where there is much better affordability. Hopefully the quality of life will go up as well simply finding a more affordable location.

They were warned in 2006 this would happen but the City Fathers laughed at the warning. Now they need to be held accountable for their actions. Shame on Bozos City Fathers.

The next San Francisco ?? Pissing and pooping ??? There are camp sights. They just have to pay for it.
I live in a camper since my house washed away in Katrina in 2005. Pay to Park !! There is no reason to let your beautiful city turn to shit.
