I think Shadow is going to do his own thing instead of joining Sonic Tails and Knuckles after the movie. Unlike Knuckles, Shadow has always been doing his own thing dealing with his own issues. He is like the Punisher, he is an Anti Hero who has a motive, either it’s good or bad, Whenever Sonic and Shadow team up, it is something in common they both have to achieve but I think he will show up and leave in the future movies, but Shadow is an iconic character so Paramount is going to use him a lot

Sonic is visibly PISSED off a LOT in both trailers. Sonic outright snarling at Shadow "WHAT did you DO?" with a scene at what looks like a hospital, with Sonic and Knuckles and Tails looking at the camera in despair? The bags under Sonic's eyes? How aggressive he gets towards Shadow?

Tom's days are numbered. And I think with a movie that has a central theme of loss, it makes narrative sense for Tom to be part of that theme literally.

This would further parallel Sonic and Shadow; I think Sonic could become very aggressive towards Shadow AFTER Shadow realizes what Maria's wish actually was. And then Shadow would be at Sonic's mercy. This is where that quote would come back into play. Sonic has a choice to make. Continue the cycle of violence, or break it. And then the two team up to take on the biolizard, and Shadow, inspired by Sonic sparing his life...Sacrifices his own for Sonic's. BUT THAT'S JUST A THEORY.
