Can Transfusing Young Blood Reverse Ageing?

Yes! Young blood DOES seem to have some benefits but...it's more complicated than that.

More Medlife Crisis:

I use the story of Ambrosia, the Silicon Valley startup that promised the fountain of youth in the form of a transfusion, to illustrate more tips and tricks of the pseudoscientific trade. Heterochronic parabiosis has some fascinating effects, but like with so much quackery, a tiny kernel of truth is extrapolated into something completely fictitious.

Plus this was an excuse for me to revisit Blade, Silicon Valley, Buffy, Interview with a Vampire, Sesame Street and of course the greatest of them all, Count Duckula.

There might be a bit of a gap till my next vid due to PhD commitments but just like cancer, I'll come back when you least expect it. In the meantime sink your teeth into a neck of facts with your free month at CuriosityStream at the link in description.

This seems like a very useful video to point people to in general about how just because "they did a study" doesn't mean you can trust their claims. Going into how to skew the results in your favour that way does so much more than many times I've seen people take apart bad studies. Especially the part about ordering so many tests but not focusing on the outcomes of all of them.

I was searching for ecg interpretation tutorials and YouTube started recommending me your videos. Couldn't be more grateful haha

I got a good laugh out of this. Statical Jerrymandering is what one of my professors called it. (when you build the study to favor the results you want to get)

That was actually an interesting way to solve the problem of pumping blood for a patient. Parent does it for the child. Glad we have pumps now, but that's genius.

Speaking of questionable studies done on mice, and applied as theoretically valid for humans.
I watched a video many moons ago, about Hydrogen Sulphide induced metabolic stasis.
It said that it could be used for:
a) long duration space travel
b) pausing a person in a critical condition (heart attack, stroke, physical trauma), so they have a better chance of surviving the trip to hospital where better care is available.

I haven't heard anything of it since, but maybe it could be an interesting topic for you to explore?

Just wanted to say that, as a night shift healthcare worker myself, I didn't know how much I needed a relatable youtube channel like this one

I met one guy when I lived in CA who claimed this worked. He was nine years younger than me and looked like my older brother. I didn't point it out to him.

Fantastic video as always! There's also another point of controversy that you din't cover, but one of the major players in this field of research, Dr. Amy Wagers, published a landmark study a few years back into identifying one factor, GDF11, they determined might be crucial in mouse parabiosis studies, needless to say it hasn't "aged" well. With retractions, conflicting studies, and as of late, research indicating that it might actually induce muscle wasting. I do believe there are circulatory factors that might dampen some aging effects, but like the other newest biotechnology innovations like stem cell implantation and CRISPR modifications, there's a long line of charlatans waiting to swindle, deceive, and mislead their clients and the public.

"Cross circulation" That whole using an adult's circulatory system to take over for a child's during surgery is kind of beautiful.

Thanks for the upload. I recall about ten years ago reading about research in Mexico transfusing blood from donors 16 years or younger into senior recipients. The scientist predicted that a novel blood protein was responsible for the rejuvenating results. Then a few years later back in 2016: probably May - July; two separate research groups reported preliminary findings one of which was a Japanese based group and both had successfully identified a protein responsible for the effects. However more research was reported as been needed by the principle investigators.

Another great video, thanks. Those clips from "What We Do in the Shadows" brought back some funny memories.
Best wishes for your PhD work. I lived in the UK 1985 to 89 doing my PhD. Thirty years of being back in Australia and I'm still not allowed to donate blood because of the Mad Cow thing. There seems to be a link between PhD and blood transfusions. I think it's worth a medical trial.

I'm ashamed to say that until now I was almost sure that it actually worked.

I need to be more critical of such claims in the future.
