RGS 20's THICC BASS #Shorts

So, there's this odd phenomena that doesn't get discussed much with steam locomotives (at least coal and wood burning ones, I am not sure if oil burners do this too) where, an odd condition in the fire resulting in incomplete combustion (too little fuel in one place, or too much fuel in another) can cause this deep rumble. It's really unsettling, and changes with fuel + draft (how hard a locomotive is working). RGS 20's firebox is set up in such a way that this happens *very* easily and quite frequently. Note once the door closes (reduction in oxygen coming in), the rumble goes away.

It's worse on the big K's (like 491 / K-37's) where the firebox and boiler are so large that the frequency of the bass roar is so low that you don't really hear it, but it causes the air to pulse like a helicopter is taking off over you.

It's a neat thing that I don't think I've ever seen discussed outside of people who operate steam. Hope you guys like this little tidbit :)

Listening to this through a 400-Ohm headset is rather intense! I've never been inside an operating steam locomotive but it strikes me as akin to gunfire in that recording equipment is unable to do it justice.
