00:00 - Intro
What's up, you guys! In today's video, I am going to be breaking down some of the realities and things that you should be aware of if you are renting a car on Turo. Let's go!

02:35 - Take Photos
First and foremost, always take photos of your rental car before and after your rental begins and ends. This is INCREDIBLY important, and not doing this will leave you vulnerable to fees with no real recourse to defend yourself.

Take photos of the interior, exterior, mileage, gas levels, center console, and floor mats. This is very important.

03:42 - Smoking
This probably goes without saying, but don't smoke in a host's car. But it goes further than just smoking, don't smoke before getting into a host's car, and don't bring any smoking items with you in a Turo car. This smell carries, and even if you did not physically smoke in the car, it can create a large inconvenience for your host and can also open you up to excessive fees.

04:50 - What Fees You Can Be Charged
As a Turo guest, you should know the fees that a Turo host can or cannot charge you. A Turo host is limited to what they can charge you for, and though there are plenty of things you CAN be charged for, there are also plenty you CANNOT be charged for. A host cannot charge you for gas on a cost-per gallon basis (like charging $5 per gallon when the gas actually cost $3.50 per gallon), and hosts cannot charge you for excessive speed or tire usage. Know what you are liable for as a guest.

05:52 - Cleaning
Now, don't get me wrong, you should return your Turo car clean. But, there are many hosts that require their guests to get the car cleaned prior to return, by taking (and paying) the car to go through a car wash, and the reality is, as a Turo host you can't do this. You cannot force a guest to clean the car before a rental, and as a Turo guest don't let a Turo host bully you into cleaning the car. There is of course a difference between a mess, and normal daily use - so be respectful, but know your rights.

06:47 - Overage Miles
Next up is overage miles, this one isn't a huge deal, but if you are a Turo guest and you have gone over in miles, see if the Turo host will let you extend. This will give you more miles and could save you some money.

08:17 - Closing

Super-helpful video! Excellent tips. 👍🏼

I’ve been looking forward to my 1st Turo rental experience (guest), after having rented from the major rental car companies for decades. Trying to get a LAMBO through those companies is a bit difficult. 😆

You are 100% correct: Pictures are critical and a must. It protects BOTH parties — Guest & Host.

Yeah… don’t smoke in someone’s else’s car.
Even left-handed cigarettes / 420 / chronic.
I was going to say pull-over somewhere safe and spark it up OUTSIDE, but you make an EXCELLENT point that smoke (of any kind) will stick to clothing and transfer to the vehicle’s interior fabric.

Treat the Turo rental as well or BETTER than your own possessions. Like renting a friend’s yard tool. Be respectful, use it, return it as you received it or better / cleaner.

Pay it forward and all this would be so much easier, better, etc. Avoid the crazies by reading the TOS and watching vids like this one! 😎🚗🛣

The funny thing is, I find Expedia car rentals cheaper in the SF Bay Area even with the $12 day full coverage, plus unlimited miles. Most Turo hosts don't include unlimited miles and the prices are more!

My horror story is that they want me to pay their rotor and break because I reported that it is making sound when I press the break. The charge is $500. I canceled my future rent. I dont wanna encounter other bad hosts. 😡😡🤬🤬 You are right for the people who are good hosts but have been affected by the bad ones.

Aubry there is a larger Car Fleet Owner with hundredes of cars around the country that is advertising Free Delivery of its cars at Chicago O'Hare Airport but charging a Parking Fee once you pick up the car. How is this a Free Delivery? They just put about 50 cars listed at the Chicago O'hare Airport but there is no way they can keep all the cars at the Airport. I thought Turo required the Owner to list where the car is parked for it's address?

My question is - is it cheaper to rent a car for a couple days or for a week & does the price go down certain days ? And can the host tell when we are looking at there cars for a possible rental? Thanks

I once drove 700-800 miles with a 600 mile trip allowance. I thought I'd have to pay for the extra mileage, but the host never charged me.

Thank you for the insights. 100 photos before and 100 photos after? Photos from the glove box, under the seat, etc.? This is time-consuming and it doesn't appear to be a smooth process and user-friendly if one has to spend about 20 minutes before and 20 minutes after just taking pictures. You are better off renting from large and reputable corporations. What is the insurance like? Is it the same as regular rental car companies like Loss Damage Wavier (LDW)? How safe is the guest's personal information? Does the so-called host get to see all personal and private information?

I'm renting a Tesla in October. How are tolls and supercharging paid for? ty

The only time I can imagine an extension being less expensive than an overage fee is if some extra days cost significantly than the price of the originally booked days. 200 miles over is the same price as the average daily rate paid, but the guest doesn't have to pay for the trip fee or protection plan, so it almost always costs less to pay the coverage fee.

As a host, I always prefer my guests pay for coverage rather than extend just to get more miles. I would rather book another guest during those extra days.
