“John Riley” was an Irish soldier who emigrated to America in 1817. He defected the U. S. Army for the other side in the Mexican-American War, leading a brigade of several hundred called the “San Patricios” in recognition of their Irish heritage. But the Yankees beat them down at the Battle of Churubusco.
