This was very helpful. Thank you. My wife is scheduled for this screening, and is very nervous about it, primarily because she is a bleeder. This video on what to expect lessened some of her anxiety. Hoping it goes well for her. Thank you too for all the varied responses from patients who received the procedure. Your input definitely helps!

Just got mine done for the first time today. I was sweating it. Not because I thought it was going to be that bad. I've had more involved surgery, but I just get anxious about any hospital visit.

It wasn't fun, but it really wasn't that bad either. Follow the diet, drink the swill when you're supposed to, and it all works out, so to speak. Definitely get the prep solution as cold as you can. Have some clear soda and hard candy on hand, and beef broth is good too up to the point where you have to stop everything the night prior - usually midnight it seems. The hot broth gave me the illusion I was eating something substantial and helped stave off the hunger a little bit. If you're not a meat eater, I supposed vegetable broth so long as it's clear. They offer the option of ondansetron (nausea meds) to take as well. I think it helped. Just one little pill half an hour or so prior to drinking the stuff the evening prior and morning of.

It's well worth the peace of mind to get done.

the sleep part during the exam was the best part, once I woke up I asked to be out back to sleep.

Hi from Canada. This explanation is totally different than my experience. I had to go through the cleansing procedure. However during the actual screening I was totally awake and watched the whole procedure on a monitor and was very thankful for that. It was very enlightening to see and I didn’t have any doubts about the health of my GI tract. Am going again soon and am hoping for the same procedure.

If a doctor is watching this I hope they can answer my question. I recently had my 4th colonoscopy over a 20 year period, my 10th time under anesthesia. For the first time I vomited during a procedure and woke up with a horrible sore throat. The post op nurse just said “You vomited. There’s nothing we can give you for that.” Then they couldn’t wait to get me out of there. I was concerned because my son vomited and aspirated during a colonoscopy and ended up in the hospital with aspiration pneumonia. The severe sore throat and tons of mucous lasted for days gut fortunately my lungs were OK. My question is - in the surgeons clinical notes they only said everything went well. Shouldn’t they have added that I vomited during the procedure?

I’m 16 and my doctor wants this done because of stomach issues I’ve had for a year and a half. My mom said she won’t make me but there is not a single bone in my body that wants this done. I have bawled my eyes out because the idea of it is so invasive. I don’t know what to do

Here in the UK you are not anaesthetised for a colonoscopy. You can have sedation if you wish, or gas and air is available. I am having one soon and I will be able to watch it on a monitor, which I think is very interesting. It's my body, I want to see what it looks like from the inside!

Having mine done a couple hours from now. Doing it drug free. F the anesthesia. I'll put up with a little discomfort any day than let them put that crap in me. Hate how it makes me feel. Scares the hell out of me. Versed has the exact opposite effect on me. Sends me straight into a panic attack. Wake up very aggressive. Pissed off at everyone around me. Pulling my IVs out. No thanks.

But how long can a person have polyps before it turns into cancer?

Just had mine two days ago. The worst part was that godawful tasting Suprep and having to drink a liter of water chaser.

I personally haven't had one yet being only 44 years old. I'm from Canada and here the screenings apparently start at 50. There are apparently modern methods offered her such as a FIT test which is done at home or a flexible sigmoidoscopy which just examines the lower part of the colon. Not having had the first hand experience myself, I ask myself, how bad can a traditional colonoscopy and a traditional prep really be?

What I will never understand is how I was taken off the gurney and put into the recliner in the recovery room!
