The biggest thing to take away from this video is that most of the ppl reviewing them have these items gifted to them. They aren’t buying every single one of them and breaking the bank. It’s easier for them to recommend the items when they aren’t actually spending the coins.

I think it goes even deeper than aesthetic; I think it's consumerism, influence culture and above all a *status symbol* to have these products just chillin on your dresser/vanity table or in tiktok videos. just like with food, we all eat with our eyes first, but I think part of it is that the influencers themselves are very conventionally attractive and that gives us a false sense of "if I buy these, I can be hot/pretty too" just like with Victoria's Secret. It's about status, desirability and likeability. It's hard to relate to these people anymore because many of us are having to choose between groceries or a phone or even a place to sleep and having these products makes people feel some sort of normalcy but I think that's a different topic for a different day. Welcome to my TedTalk.

this skincare health phase was definitely influenced by the rise of korean culture, media and beauty

My new rule of thumb for buying products is “would I buy it if the packaging wasn’t cute?” In other words, am I buying it for the packaging or for what it actually is?

I think the self care thing mainly came from lockdown, I remember when selling there was a big boom in self care baskets & stuff because people couldn’t go out & buy it themselves. Consumerism also boomed because people were ordering everything online & had nothing better to look forward to than to online shop, as well as a bigger focus on self care

I think it also becomes this weird competition to prove that you care about your skin through consummerism. If you don't have the on trend skincare products, are you even a true self-care lover? I think that's the pitfall we have to avoid falling into welp

my issue with glow recipe is that their selling point is food stuff (like avocado, watermelon, etc) Your skin cannot extract food nutrients. Only your intestine can and that's only after your saliva, teeth, and stomach have broken the food down. Therefore, based on this premise, I don't think that they're worth the money. Also, the fragrance in glow recipe is SO strong

i love selfcare, fitness, skicnare haircare makeup, pilates, yoga, matcha lattes etc etc. But I do NOT like overconsumption. "that girl" would be a minimalist and I will die on that hill. "It girls" care about the environment and being financially responsible.

I love how soft her voice and is not super hyper and crazy. its relaxing just like the products in the vid are meant to be 🌺

At this point, every influencer shoving the same product down our throats should be a red flag, not a point of inspiration. I'm not saying they are being malicious, but it should raise questions.

As a Sephora employee I actually peruse the aesthetic TikTok videos just so I can see what’s going to sell out.

My biggest flex is having a cosmetician sister, so every time I go shopping with her, I giver her some product and she gives me a whole review about it by reading the ingredients.

My all time favorite body cream is the Rituals "Ritual of Sakura". Smells so good, very moisturizing and soft. I love that the smell is longlasting and that it actually keeps my skin moisturized. I've been using it for years now. Just wish they also had a travel size jar. Loved the video

Not skin care but I remember my friend wanted to get hair oil so we went to target and found those small droplet bottles for like $ 10-20. We ended up going to the desi/Arab market later to get some groceries and bought the Indian hair oils that are much cheaper and probably work 20x better

This is completely true! As a Korean, I've been seeing more and more skincare and beauty videos on my FYP. However, one thing that I've noticed is a prominent theme of either being "rich" or "aesthetic" when many of the products people slap on their faces don't work. I've seen probably hundreds of GURWMs and nighttime routines full of expensive, Sephora products that are completely useless and unnecessarily expensive. It's not even a routine for their skin, it's a routine to show off how much money they have to the public.

Jsyk, Chlorophyll water isn't actually chlorophyll since actual chlorophyll cannot mix into water. Good video though! As a skincare junkie myself, I've noticed a lot of people trying products based solely off the aesthetic of them. That used to be me early on when I was getting into skincare but after awhile, you realize that what works for others doesn't mean it will work for your skin or even target the areas that you want to see improvement in.

I have experience formulating skincare products and I gotta say, most of the products out there have little to no benefit for the skin. For example, the popular Mielle rosemary and peppermint hair oil contains cheap carrier oils that are not similar to the natural oil your hair produces. I have been making my own rosemary and peppermint oil which stimulates blood flow and directly contributes to hair growth. Rosemary oil is as efficient as minoxidil, a popular hair growth agent, and it's one of the few oils that dermatologists recommend for hair health and growth. Also; 10:53; Extracts have no scent, so the scent cannot come from the extract. The dew drops, contain a large amount of fragrance which is not good for the facial skin. I would recommend people to do their research and learn more about skincare because TONS of brands are literally deceiving us.
