I was reading Brene Brown's Atlas Of The Heart last night. She talks about the difference between sympathy and empathy.
"Rather than being a tool for connection, sympathy emerged in the data as a form of disconnection. Sympathy is removed: When someone says, 'I feel sorry for you' or 'That must be terrible,' they are standing at a safe distance. Rather than conveying the powerful 'me too' of empathy, it communicates 'not me,' then adds, 'but I do feel sorry for you.' Sympathy can even be a tool for shame..."
"You'll get over it" might have seen the hurt, but it didn't engage it.
That middle-school experience fueled much of my life's work, in hindsight. I'm not mad at my teacher for it. What do I expect, as an adult now looking back at an adult overwhelmed in a room full of kids? And anyway, I screw this same thing up all of the time. I'm thankful. It's just as good to learn about the ways you don't want to be in the world as the ways you do. I wanted to empathize. Even in my spirituality, what has always stood out to me as most intriguing has been the empathetic mystery of incarnation.
Anyway, Alex Zarek I just rolled out all of the details for the premiere this Friday:
