The original artist @tanya is super controlled with the way she smashes the paintings, using just enough force to crack the glass but not enough to make it fly.

I would try taking a nail to the painting. Like bang the nail with the hammer. It still has force but it might create a cleaner crack.

It's actually cool the hammer broke it near the tear duct. It adds a layer of sadness like the cracks represent tears breaking someone apart

This is a really cool idea!

I second putting the painting in a bag, maybe put a paper towel over top. That way the glass is contained and the paper towel allows a modicum of cushioning when being hit.

Additionally, would recommend having a solid colored back piece you could put resin or glue on—you would have to figure out how to best transfer the shattered piece onto this backing but I think it could be a way to give more depth to the piece. I think that's also how some of the artist's original pieces immediately had the red behind (by having a solid color back piece).

It could offer a ton of variety—like having the shattered eye with intentionally missing pieces to reveal a second eye underneath or a textured painting, with the layers separated (and glued together) by resin. I think it could be a really intriguing effect!
