It's a paradox. If you killed Thanos as a baby, he wouldn't grow up and get the stones. If he never gets the stones, he never snaps half the universe away. If he never snaps half the universe away, you have no reason to go back in time thus you don't and you don't end up killing Thanos which starts your original timeline again. It's a circle you can't stop.

The fact is no one actually knows what time travel would be like. They chose to make time travel be like this simply for the plot.

This is their version of time travel. All other movies and tv shows provide a different explanation. I believe that they could use this loophole to bring back characters that have died because they opened this door. If they went back to the moment Thor got his axe and told specifically go for the head, none of this would happen. Time would have simply adjusted itself, and the future version would have simply disappeared. That's what would have happened. They needed to kill Thanos at the right moment because he set a series of events in motion

Their so called quantum time machine never ever could send anyone to the past
It actually sends the traveller in a parallel universe where the time exists on some other scale
So, even if they had killed Thanos or what not, their universe won't feel anything, and, stay with me, when the so called time travellers came back, they never returned to their own universe, the returned to some other reality where their adventure in past had an effect at their present
And, do you know what is the single point that defends my theory, it is this:
Had they actually been time travelling, they would have experienced the grandfather paradox

Really what they should've done is gone back in time to get or create more Pym particles, then take several extra years of practice runs and training for a better and more foolproof plan.
