Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift's former boyfriend and the rumoured inspiration behind "Back to December", spoke about a regret from his time dating Swift. On his podcast "The Squeeze" with his wife Taylor Dome, he was asked about a moment in his life he would go back to. He chose the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where he presented the award to Swift and was unaware that Kanye West's interruption was not part of a skit. Lautner described the moment as confusing and recalls laughing at first, but quickly realized the seriousness of the situation when he saw Swift's face. Taylor Swift also wrote about the incident in a diary entry in 2019.
