Loved this analysis made me laugh a few times and feel a lot of anger for this Duke!
I am trying to read a poem/ essay/ chapter of my book a day (on your advice) and in the first day alone I read the essay ‘this is water’ by Wallace and am blown away! Love your channel❤

Many, many thanks for that wonderfully perfect reading of the poem -- which I have always found rather difficult to recite accurately. As for whether the Duchess was actually murdered or whether she was simply shut up in a nunnery, it probably doesn't much matter which of those views is right -- in either case she underwent one or another versions of death. The Duke is quite clearly intended to be portrayed as the monster he indeed is. But even with that as a given, it is possible to argue that some of his criticism of the Duchess is -- if not justified -- at least understandable. When we marry, for example, do we not expect our partner in life's journey to see us rather differently, and more positively, than the rest of the human beings we meet? It is clear that the Duchess is fundamentally a very fine human being indeed. But she has become that very fine human being by refusing to distinguish between degrees in terms of her reaction to things. If her own values dictate that she expend the same emotional energy on appreciation for all things in precisely the same degree, does that not raise suspicions about who she really is underneath the surface of things? Browning was too subtle a poet not to have considered this reservation as one which ought to be considered.

I always liked this poem. Love your analysis. I just found you and have been going through all your old videos. Bought Proust's Remembrance of Things Past because of she is dead. One might still smile at a convent, but he made sure all smiles stopped.

Took this in school. Was surprised a few years later to listen to The Painter, by Chris deBurgh.
