How to play any guitar chord or scale by holding your guitar correctly, or how to reach any chord with a slight adjustment to your hand and you will avoid all dead or buzzing strings just by getting the technique correctly.

When learning how to play the guitar it's not unusual to come across a chord that just seems impossible to play and many people believe they have fingers that are too small or fingers that are too fat to play these guitar chords. 99% of the time you can play the chord or scale and you just need to be shown how to hold the guitar correctly to play these chords. It is easy to underestimate the importance of the position of the thumb on the back of the guitar neck when playing guitar chords but once you understand this you will find that all the new guitar chords you learn to play in the future will be easier to finger correctly. I have to warn you though that sometimes holding the guitar correctly can feel a little uncomfortable or unnatural, but after a little practise you will get use to the new way of holding the guitar and will find everything easier to play.

Beautifully presented, Gareth. Coming from the olden days, early childhood and violin practice. Being screamed at by teachers "You are not to hold that violin up with you finger hand!". It is true and rarely mentioned. Do not try to hold the guitar up with your fret hand. It is a natural (in the beginning) thing to do. It is strapped (or should be) it isn't going to fall. Fantastic. Finally the truth is spoken. How can anyone learn an instrument without knowing the “thumdamendals”. I know there are many guitarist that don’t follow or know this technique. When I started guitar lessons way back in the mid sixties my first lesson the teacher told me how to hold the guitar and the thumb behind the neck and fingers which act as a pivot point providing great access to the fret board. I know I am a snob at times when I see others play with the thumb hanging over the fretboard. Yes I know some fret the strings this way. And yes whatever works for you is great. When I taught I gave this advice but in the end it was the student to determine what worked.
