Trafotin, I just wanted to say thank you. Your videos are concise and yet they still touch upon topics that are of interest to me. This video on installing alpine linux is brilliant. I found what you had to say easy to understand .... at no point did I find myself thinking, "yeah, whatever that's supposed to mean" .... linux commenters are stuck in their own heads to such an extent usually that they usually can't communicate with people who haven't been using linux 20 years. You are a very notable exception. I intend to watch a bunch more of your videos in the future because you can definitely teach me things I need to know. It's a rare trait ... : - )

Was genuinely just thinking to check if there was a recent upload... and there it is!

14:35, separate solution, treat the hardware install as just a main layer, install vbox or something to create a vm on an external drive, something like /mnt/VMs/alpine.bin, and then declare another volume on the drive (primary or logical, doesn't matter) as /home, whenever you leave the laptop just close vbox or whatever you're using and remove the drive to bring with you, when you come back plug it back in, re-open your vm and continue normally. No matter who gets onto your computer, they won't be able to steal what is not there because it's with you. Just make sure the external drive and it's cable/s uses the latest USB standard your computer supports for that extra bit of speed

thanks for the video!

Thanks, this was so handy. Out of all the other alpine setup tutorials I watched, this has the most useful information. For example 14:06

I think alpine's installer could benefit from simply asking the user if they're installing for local use (desktop) or remote use (server) and then give a temporary GUI for that kind of installation, less mistakes would be made and would surely attract more users

So you need a Distro with a Security Team and you add the Community repo which IS Not unser the Security Team afaik?

I love Alpine. It's so easy to install nowdays, and with flatpak and distrobox, I can get all the apps I use, including gaming.

I wanted to use AlpineLinux as a microcontroller development environment, but I installed Gcompat and libc++, and added the missing library apk from the installation warning, but was unable to successfully install Microchip's MPLAB IDE X.

ArchLinux actually had a nurses installer right up until about 2008/2010 but the maintainer for it quit and no one on the Arch team was willing to maintain it.

@22:31 - Awesome. Didn't know that was available in Arch Linux for desktop setup!

I like what you said at 1:43. This is the pain we have mostly in the linux community, stupid controversies and hate wars. lmao

Nice channel, I’m gonna have to keep up with your vids.

My favorite distros currently are Void and Alpine.

As an artix user, I agree, that SystemD is easier to use, and that is mostly due to the fact that every solution to solve a problem defaults to it.

Nice video. Alpine would have been a contender for my default desktop, but I can't play steam games on it, so that was a deal-breaker. But I love the efficiency of this unique distro. Artix was working great for me for some time, but Nvidia drivers don't update at the same time as 32-bit compatibility libraries, which are necessary to run steam. So once in a while steam will break for a few days. For that reason I switched to Garuda. It's more bloated, but my steam hasn't broken on me yet on Garuda.

I gotta say, it's a lot more interesting when a distro "review" involves installing everything from scratch instead of just clicking on the Calamres installer. I was really interested in Alpine when I first started using Linux, but it gets so little attention that I ended up with stupid Manjaro.
