We enjoy a few cocktails every day while cruising, but given the current pricing structure we do not purchase drink packages. Watch this video before you make your decision, it might save you hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars!

The megaship cruise lines are copying the airlines by advertising unrealistic prices, and then actually charging several times that for the actual cruise. They list interior cabins for as low as $50/day per person but nobody pays that because you have to add port charges, taxes, gratuities, cabin upgrades, Wi-Fi, bottled water, soda cans, alcoholic beverages, MDR upcharges, specialty restaurant upcharges, travel protection, plus expenses for rides and other amusements, etc. Plus any spa, excursion, or casino expenditures. It's easy to spend $300 - $500 per person per day after booking a basic balcony cabin for $100 per person per day. Most folks don't add it all up. Apparently SoTweetie does add it up and she knows when it's no longer a good value for her. Bravo!

Dang that is wild! Good to know. I usually fill up a mouthwash bottle and bring it along (not the clear kind of mouth wash tho). I also have brought liquor in a water bottle. You have to fill the water bottle up to the top, leaving no air so that when they shake it, no bubbles appear. I also have bought marijuana joints on but I had to pack those in my pocket.

If I had unlimited drinks I would easily drink 5-10 drinks a day, which would kill me. That's the main reason I wouldn't do unlimited drinks, LOL.

Great video and suggestions! I primarily sail NCL and drinks are unlimited and included with most of the cabin categories. I'm sure one is paying for it one way or another but really helps in budgeting. They do charge a daily gratuity though so that is extra. I usually add on the Unlimited Starbucks package with is less than $15 per day + daily 20% gratuity. Which is a great deal!

Hello! Thank you for the details on drink packages for Royal! This is why I have not booked a cruise with them yet.I keep booking with NCL because that free at sea offer is amazing. Also that deal is good when your at port too. I would love to try Royal once though! Not crapping on them, there ships are beautiul. My husband and I have to have a drink package. lol Happy Cruising!

Sounds like a great idea. I have to say...the most expensive drink I ever purchased was a single glass of 9oz Pinot Grigio at the airport in Newark, NJ while waiting for my second flight home. It was $30 USD and that was before tax and tip. Since I am Canadian, it converts to much more. Thanks for the great tips.

I get five free drinks a day as a Royal Caribbean Crown & Anchor Diamond Plus level member and many times I can’t use all my free drink allowance, specially on port days. I don’t drink coffee or tea, so don’t have them as an option to use up my drink vouchers.

Wife and i always get it because if u have a premium coffee in the morning y fresh squeeze orange juice at breakfast and a beer at the pool a wine at dinner u see how it adds up quickly worth every penny

I plan on gettting the refreshment package cuz i love coffee and milkshakes. I was worrying about alcohol because i do want to drink some on the ship (its for my 21st birthday) i was planning on bringing wine and spreading it out over 7 days but now that you brought to light the little soda and alcohol packages i might get that and the wine along with mios since i already get them a lot👍🏽

Carnival is just as bad. I look at it this way. I'm an occasional drinker at home. If I buy a bottle of rum or bourbon it will last me a month or more for mixed drinks. I only do it when I'm in a mood to relax a bit. 6 drinks a day is unheard of for me. However, on a cruise I will likely drink 1 or 2 a day while on the ship.
That's another thing though...You're not going to always be "on the ship" during your cruise. The package doesn't cover drinks you get while on excursions or exploring. So unless you are planning on being "three sheets to the wind" the whole cruise or have an Eastern European constitution for alcohol, (I've heard things ;) ), its likely not going to be actually worth it for most people if they do the math. ;)

Everybody is different. Personally, I'd rather pay $300 per day for a luxury cruise with many inclusions like free specialty restaurants and included soft drinks, specialty coffees, etc. (with little to no included alcohol) than pay $150 per day for basic accommodations on a megaship, plus another $150 per day in added expenses for dining and drinks. But that's just me. A "cruise vacation" means something different to everybody.

Cheese & wine selections are now $49.99. And be careful with your calculations on the rum/vodka/gin selections, because those are 375ml bottles (half bottles).

Now you two are thinking smartly for someone in your may want to go on an alcohol fast on board a cruise just to dry out for the hell of I know thats hard especially when you're can just get a drink off board the ship at one of the there you need to be very bars serve mixed drinks with flavored rubbing alcohol that you buy in the local drug store...
