Starting as a symbolic lights out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment. It’s been more successful than we ever imagined - inspiring and empowering individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in 190 countries and territories to take actions for climate change and nature loss.

While climate change remains a vital issue for our planet, we believe the spotlight must also focus on the accelerating loss of nature and the threats this poses to us all. It is ever more important to raise awareness that preserving nature is the critical foundation of a healthy planet and an immediate, powerful and cost-effective solution to climate disaster and pandemic prevention.

And when you turn all those lights back on, the power surge will force the grid to activate more fossil fueled powerplants. Yet turning off some lights never caused other plants to shut down. Well done, you just increased CO2 emissions.
