I think it's just overloading the internal resistor and dissipating that heat through the heat sink.

Would you please teach me/us to homemake a soldering gun out of a transformer preferably I need a good soldering gun to thicken a few controller traces up thank you for the video

I wonder if you put a low value resistor between out and ground and connect it normally if it would still get hot enough without destroying the regulator.

This is just a overheated device. Of course you can solder with it, as long as it doesnt break. But why should someone do that. Everybody has a soldering iron, heating plate or even an infrared oven. My personal favourite is soldering on a campfire.
