I think the parts where the CMCs should've known how trains work and how to read maps can be explained away by 2 things:
1, they were so distracted with how excited they were to look older than they were to realize they got off at the wrong stop, and 2, the creepy pony who drew them a map had messy or lackluster cartography skills and so anypony would've had trouble reading it.
