It's only a loss that big if Sony was able to make marvel movies that were as good or better than phase 1 and 2 marvel movies. Which is possible, we've all seen spider-verse

That isn't a loss because Sony didn't lose any money. They simply became cautious not to take such a huge risk but lost on it.

this is so wrong on so many levels. Sony didn’t BUY Spider-man they bought the license to use spider-man. HUGE difference. They also had no want or need to produce a massive catalog of media since spider-man alone was worth $1 billion annually.

Actually it’s the other way around marvel lost billions when they signed Spider-Man over to Sony and will never be able to buy the character back

Yes and no. If I go into a store and buy a lottery ticket, I was thinking about buying 5 but decided not to. Then, the right lottery ticket ended up being one of the tickets I hadn't bought. It is both a mistake but also a gamble.

Not all businesses succeeds and Sony was not as rich, this was before PS. They spent the right amount of money for themselves at that time which brought their profits to overwhelming numbers. There is also no gurantee they would have done what Disney has done with Marvel today. Their best option was to team with Disney and they did it. Now they can freely leech off of spiderman, and they actually put insane work on their projects like spiderverse and the PS games. It undeniably helped them through their huge success. They continue to team with Disney and they watch as their character goes on epic adventures which makes them side money.

Sony are geniuses!
