My husband and I often watch with captions on despite having full hearing because the character often talk too softly or quickly for us to make out exactly what was said. It keeps us from having to pause, rewind, and rewatch as much. Also, it happens too often that some parts are too loud and others are too quiet.

I'm not deaf (or HoH) but I do have Sensory Processing Disorder (part of my autism, actually.)
I can hear perfectly fine, but it's hard for me to separate sounds from other sounds in my mind, and such. This has a marked affect on my ability to understand speech.
And, it is sometimes VERY hard or even impossible to understand what people are actually saying.
I often need captions on video to actually understand what someone is saying in a video.
It gets a lot worse when there is background noise, to the point where I'd consider captions a necessity for me.

I can still hear, which means that I *can* go without captions.

But, it goes to prove that captions are more than an accessibility tool for specifically the deaf and HoH folk.

The only times that I won’t use captions are; when they’re wrong and really far off script, when the captions do the weird thing where they change from the top to the bottom of the screen every few seconds and it’s to the point that you can’t see the characters, and when the captions are in a language that I can’t speak.

I started putting closed captioning on the tv when my kids were born so they could start learning to read. Not as a substitute for actual reading of course but it helped all my kids with reading. Now that they are older, I can’t watch stuff without them on. And I fully hear.

I love the captions as someone who can hear perfectly fine. I feel like I struggle understanding what the characters are saying on screen even though it's in my native language. I hear the words, I can recognize that they are words it just... doesn't sound right. So, subtitles always help

I'm HOH and captions are a MUST. It's really hard on YouTube sometimes because the automatic captions are slow and inaccurate. So whenever someone takes the time to caption the videos, I always appreciate it so much.

My dad despises captions and refuses to use them despite me telling him repeatedly that it helps me because my hearingaids don't help me when I can't read a person's lips

As someone who has to deal with ADHD, and as a non-native English speaker; yeah, subtitles are definitely a must.

(Especially if they're big, bold, yellow letters)

We love having good captions on because it helps us catch a character's little mutterings that go by so quickly you can miss them if you're just listening.

Plus this house has a minor anime obsession so we're kinda used to subtitles now

I watched so many foreign films in my youth that I love having captions and subtitles on always!

As someone with a slight attention deficit, closed captions are the only thing that can get me to focus on the show

I never used to have closed captioning on, until I started watching K-dramas. Now, its such an ingrained routine for me to find out how to turn on closed captioning on any streaming platform, even though I no longer watch K-dramas or anything in foreign languages as much as I used to.

My parents, however, absolutely hate when the captions pop up and basically toss the remote at me to turn them off for them. Most platforms I believe keep the setting on for only the one profile, but their tv service keeps it on until they are turned back off.

My mom is partially deaf and whenever we watch movies or shows she streams a speaker for the tv to her hearing aids and we also have the captions on. It’s so hard for me to not have captions on because I’m so used to reading them and watching at the same time.

I know! I have an issue with auditory processing and find it so frustrating when people say cc is “annoying” or “distracting!” I understand it might be bothersome to those who are not used to it, but I can’t understand the content we are trying to share otherwise!

My husband and I aren't hard of hearing or deaf, but we almost always have the captuons on 😂. People don't speak loudly enough and background noise is always too loud. Plus, I keep the volume on low when the baby is sleeping, so I have captions on when she naps too.
