Fun fact! The railgun literally tears itself apart after each use. The magnets are so unbelievably powerful that it rips itself apart. Although there have been great strides in preventing this and there is said to be a functional prototype that can fire 5 times without need for maintenance.

Remember learning this back in engineering school. This is one great example of “limited by current technology”, the amount of maintenance, structure, and most importantly mass amount of energy required to fire it just once, doesn’t justify the damage it can dealt compared to other modern firearms.

It also costs like 50k to fire one round and it requires enormous amounts of power (as in electricity). Billions were spent to develop it but as far as I know there has never been one actually put into commission.

Fun fact the smoke you see from the barrel is the Railgun metal because there’s no combustion it just rips itself apart

The issue with this is the force of the Railgun firing also damages the gun meaning the gun needs to be repaired after every use.

No gunpowder to explosives, just projectile. But after a few shots the rails themselves have to be replaced. Made function impractical. Also the need to aim for a target is tough when the entire system is this large. In the end missiles were more practical.
