Many YouTube viewers regard YouTubers as a greedy bunch, getting free stuff to review and rolling in ad revenue cash generated by the YouTube audience. Here are some home truths.

4XOVERLAND is the home of Andrew St Pierre White’s work. Andrew, AKA ASPW, is one of the world’s best-respected 4×4 writers, commentators and adventure-travel filmmakers. So much so that he is now commonly referred to by his audience as ’ The David Attenborough of 4WD’.

2024 and Andrew is celebrating 40 years of remote overland travel with two new 4wd builds in Australia and three expeditions that include Africa, Australia and Indonesia. 4xOverland is based in Western Australia.

Very true, Andrew. Only a handful of big YouTubers can live off the ad revenue alone, and they have multiple revenue streams. Excellent dose of reality. Aligns completely with my experience.

I work in TV Business almost 30 Years now. And i can clearly say: Right in all points. Not only at YT but also in TV. And one point i had really laugh loud: How does a camera track or a gimbal help the storytelling. So true. I have this discussion twice a week at least. Story first - technique 2nd. 100%. Thats why shuttering cat clips with bad sound are successful :-) Well said, Andrew!

Loved this episode … well done for sticking your neck out to discuss what is what I can only assume to be a ‘touchy subject’ to some. Well done sir 👏🏼

Most YouTube viewers are naive and think most YouTube producers earn huge amounts of cash, like Mr. Beast.
Good context provided. Thanks.

I have said this for years that I wish Andrew would let us financially support any of his work. I would pay for anything you could ever want or want to build. We can get you a shop space and hire a few people to work for you. We only want to go on one or two trips a year with you, we also have a place in NC with over 100 acres you could come stay in the U.S. and build whatever you want here. Anyway, can’t get enough of your work and art.

yep brought it to the point Andrew, in my case I’m retired and the small YouTube and associated incomes never contributed to my living expenses. YouTube as a business is is a waste of energy and resources unless you happen to be one of the few very big ones. for me it’s a hobby and a passion similar to you.

I have purchased alot of product purely based on Andrew's reviews, which has a lot to do with his Unbiased reviews. Alu-cab, Nitecore the list goes on and on. Every time it has been a quality product and has been very reliable.

Great insight into the world you exist within.
Hanging a picture in the space station needs no nail as surely it just floats wherever you leave it.
Keep up the shouty

Andrew is a brilliant film maker. I have done his course on Udemy. As an example Andrew takes what he calls B roll, where i saw no value, and turns it into a mood catching masterpiece.

Andrew, your viewers trust your judgement and are entertained by what you produce. Please keep providing good honest content. Stop listening to the haters, they are jealous they don’t have your experience and they don’t understand the hours and years you have committed to get to the position you are in today.

I only really watch reviews to see how the product works, if i dont personally know them ill take the "quality" of the product with pinch of salt, ill make up my own mind etc, as YT is a business, Instagram, FB, tiktok etc

Can't you do a video detective style deep dive of the terrible state of rebranding of products in the industry?

Thankyou for explaining Andrew but I would never question your integrity or honesty, that`s why I am one of your Patreon supporters.😀

It comes down to trust. We all understand that you have integrity, we can trust your reviews. With other newer YouTubers desperate for recognition and money, constantly mention products and affiliate discount links, we can’t trust those. Yours we do. And I’m sure most of us appreciate that very much.

Andrew we have bumped heads on this topic in the past. It’s great to hear a full rundown of your position. This was so much better than the “this video isn’t sponsored” rider you used to use. The tent example was a great way of telling the story. I still have a nagging doubt over objectivity, though less with your channel than otheres. I’ve been following you for enough years to appreciate your integrity. There are a lot of channels whose primary content is reviews and a bad review is likely to result in a reduction of review items being received. A company is unlikely to provide an item for review if they know the review will be bad. Ironically bad reviews probably get more views than positive reviews. Anyway I’ve waffled. I appreciated this video. Thank you for making it.

To me the main thing that needs to be done is disclosing what the relationship is. If you bought it with your own money, say it. If it was given for a review, say it. If you approached them, say that, if they approach you, say that. Conflicts of interest always exist and always will exist, the important thing is making sure they're managed so everyone knows what the situation is.
