In many of our Creations, we use pieces on which we need to Create Keyways, slits, multi-wedges and normally for their creation there are a lot of ways and machines. On this video, we decided to show the making of a slotting machine which is placed on a lathe.

I'm not sure which is more impressive - the build, or the video production! I wish I was as skilled in either of them!

You are indeed an "EXTREMEST"! Living up to your name. I have absolutely zero lathe/milling knowledge but I loved this sort of thing while I was in high school. Unfortunately Africa being what it is, realising your dream is for the few privileged ones. Anyways, if you should by any chance stray into Johannesburg please let me know. I will happily pay for your hotel bills as long as I can, show you around and ask you about those crazy skills you have and perhaps persuade you to consider me for your "spanner boy" even if I am now 56. Thank you for everything you do and share.

Perhaps, like a shaper, a clapper mount for the cutting tool would prevent dragging the bit on the back stroke, particularly on steel stock. Did the barrel warp after welding on the mount for the tool post. Nice workmanship!

I was impressed with your slotting machine. Looks like a lot of work but you seem to be very fast at what you do. I had my boss come and ask me if I could make a internal Hex in the end of a shaft to accept a 1/2 inch allen wrench. I did what he requested on the lathe. Took me about 1 1/2 hrs. I didn't make a machine or get a motor to do the job. I just took a tool bit and ground it a little wider than the lands on a 1/2 inch allen wrench. Sharpened the end and the rest was H.P.F.M.

Great video and a great tool that we don't see homemade very often. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum last week 😎

Friendly reminder to never leave the chuck key in the chuck.

With a bit more work to the lathe by adding a ClickSprings style indexer mechanism, you could cut splines.

Wow! What a show! I'm a machinist myself and I think there's some room for accuracy improvement. Probably caused by the equipment you own. But, sir, hats of for your video! Damn this is swift, smooth and looks so easy! I hope the young folks get motivated and start machining too. I'm curious to know how much time it cost to make this video. Thank you and all the best, Job

Watching your videos makes me feel like I should have become a machinist instead of a mechanic. Seems so satisfying...
