"What was your wish?" Audrielle inquired, as Hera flung the lantern into the air. Only the soft sound of the waves lapping across the coast, offering a soothing lullaby, broke the awkward silence between them. Was it too personal? Audrielle wondered as a wave of regret swept over her. Did she cause a trigger? she parted her lips to speak, but she was soon hushed
"You." Hera's eyes mist over, and her bottom lip trembles. Hera's response perplexed Audrielle since she appeared grave, she wasn't making playful jokes this time, and this began to frighten Audrielle.
"Sweetcakes, I'm literally right in front of you." In an effort to appear ignorant, Audrielle chuckled softly. She was aware of the approaching tragedy.
"I know that.. But you're not mine.." Hera moved closer to Audrielle upon turning to face her, stroking her fingertips across her cheeks, brushing them up to her jawline. "I want you all to myself, I want to have a far bigger part in your life. I want to wake up next to you and never have to question our relationship again. Audrielle, I see the next 10 years of my life with you! I want to scream because it took me so long to finally say this. I love you! I love you so much!"
Audrielle was left speechless, she examined Hera's eyes carefully for something, which she did, it was there; it was no longer lust but rather something delicate, warm, and genuine.. She prayed that this was merely a practical joke, another trick from Hera, one of her games that always left her yearning for hope. If she was serious, why now? Why didn't she say this sooner when Audrielle used to feel the same? Although she realizes Hera can't be held accountable, the fact that she is no longer capable of replicating this love kills her. Despite a part of her wanting to, her heart cries for Maureen.
Hera is slowly crumbling; the moment Audrielle withdrew her gaze, she understood what was about to unfold. She was deeply in denial despite knowing that things wouldn't end as she had hoped, that her love couldn't be replicated, and that Audrielle would end up choosing Maureen over her. She deluded herself of lies that soon consumed her.
"Hera." Audrielle's eyelids shut, she placed her hand on Hera's and she began to squeeze it lightly in a consolingly manner. "I loved you back then, I swear. And I hate you for not saying this sooner." A tear beads on her cheeks and she dabs it away with her fingertips. "Then maybe I wouldn't have ended up falling for someone that requires a lot of risk to be with, I want to fall in your arms again but I can't.. We can't, Maureen has already won my heart. I'm in love with her."
Hera expected it but didn't understand why. She wondered if things would have been different, will fate still be able to bring Audrielle and Maureen together even if she was more vocal about how she felt? Will she be at the same place but in a different circumstance?.. But perhaps her sole purpose is to serve as a bridge between Maureen and Audrielle.
