Lackadaisy's Messy Lines [Scribble Kibble]

Time to appreciate that Lackadaisy is hand animated and there are no rigs. The style leaves in the sketchy animation lines from the final rough pass of the animation, rather than hiding them. Its gritty look works well for a jazzy gangster cat world set in the 1900's time of USA prohibition (when alcohol was illegal).

Tracy Butler's Lackadaisy comic has unequivocally amazing art, and the production team for the movie did a fantastic job at creating a style worth its salt. We're lucky they went with 2D hand animation instead of trying to perfectly mirror the complex look of the comics via 2D puppets or 3D models.

If you *didn't* like the lines, over the past week I heard a lot of that side too. I made this video the day the film came out so I had no idea that would happen, otherwise it would've been great to talk about why some people don't like this stylistic choice!

It also fits so nicely with the vintage aesthetic. It remindsme of aristocats and such

I remember seeing the sketch lines, and thinking "Oh, they forgot to get rid of those."
Then I realized they were intentional.
Then I realized WHY they were intentional.
These guys are the real deal!

If the show gets picked up I kind of hope they’ll be allowed to keep the linings and not have to clean them up

Across the Spiderverse did the exact same thing too, most notable with scenes featuring the spot.

If you love to see animations with some of those construction lines intact, I suggest Wolfwalkers.

I noticed the sketch marks at the start of the animation and I already knew this was going to be a good animation. It just adds a bit more life to what are already great characters.

Even though the lines can be a bit distracting (especially around the faces), I can definitely see how it helps the with the little details like the shape of clothes and such.

It added a lot of character- I will 100% admit, it was a little distracting when it was in the calmer section at the beginning, but during the action and the ending, they were a lot less pronounced yet added that nice little touch you were referring to here.

There is something I remember reading about why sketches do look better than line art. Its because in your eye, nothing is completely still or perfectly in one place! Your two eyes are seeing two images at once and blurring them together! its why sketches look more natural and realistic, since when you are making a sketch, you are mostly thinking of the movement and character of the drawing rather than making it perfect, leaving lots of scratches while drawing. Line art can take away a lot of that personality and depth in the original sketch, since you are now thinking of making the lines clear, and getting rid of all the scratches that actually add to the drawing! I’m really happy that they are still ever so slightly visible in Lackadaisy :D
It’s really nice to look at, and especially now you can see the works of both the rough animation and the cleanup animation, so no animator’s work in the final product! It’s very amazing :)

I'm not even an artist and I've had this same experience. I was doing a project in school where I doodled something up, and to be fancy I scanned it and cleaned up all of my lines. While it looked cleaner, it just....lost something. That subtlety in detail that comes with the rough lines just hits different.

Sketchy styles go straight to my soul, I absolutely love these dang construction lines, you see it in WolfWalkers too (NOT TO MENTION THEY ONLY HAPPEN WHEN THEY ARE IN THE “WILD” PART OF THE SETTING AND THE STRUCTURED PART IS SUPER GEOMETRIC AND CLEAN MAN I LOVE ANIMATION)

Tbh I really love when animations has this really "bad" effects to them that makes it visually better

The sketch lines made the animation so much better, it felt alive and 3d

Totally agree. Been trying to get more and more character in my work. Always loved pencil tests more than finished work.

I love the fact that the construction lines are there. Similar to some episodes of helluva boss. Just makes it so much more relatable and more human.

It's just incredible how great the messy lines look! Of course I've always agreed my sketches looks 10x better than my final products, but for them to actually incorporate the sketches in an actual appealing way that still shows it, but it could also be missed if you aren't looking hard enough is incredible! I saw them on my first watch, and was first initially like, "is that on purpose?" then as I saw it more and more, I was like, "I love everything about this now!"

The roughs can also be seen from time to time in Wolfwalkers. It’s a nice detail which adds that little bit of warmth to an animation. Seeing the lines adds a lot more depth and personality to the video
