The BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular) will fight the Lok Sabha polls together in 2024. The BJP has offered the regional party four seats in Karnataka. So is the alliance with the BJP a marriage of convenience or a matter of revival or survival for the JD(S)? Party spokesperson TR Prasad Gowda agrees that the arrangement is for the survival of the JD(S). He doesn't shy away from accepting that the party had to face a setback in the recently concluded Assembly polls but the party has its own ideology. He adds that Congress' 5 guarantees worked for them while JDS' Pancharatna yojana played an important part but couldn't help them win the election. On the question of JD(S) talking about Kannadiga pride, senior journalist Vijay Grover said that in the last decade regional parties have emerged stronger. However, he believes there is more compulsion for the JD(S) and not for the BJP and thus has to negotiate with the BJP as a second fiddle. Senior journalist Ramesh Sethuraman is of the opinion that the BJP has some support in a few Vokkaliga belts and Karnataka is the only strong bastion in the South for the party. So if they want to remain in power they have to rely on the JD(S). Political Analyst Prof. Chambi Puranik believes this is a wise decision by Deve Gowda and there is no better opportunity for the JD(S) than to go with the BJP.
