How to graft Japanese Maples

In this video we will look at a proper technique for grafting Japanese maple trees. We will be taking scion from a garnet Japanese maple and grafting it to green Japanese maple rootstock.

I would like to add a note. If doing this in the summer you might have a higher success rate if you do not strip the leaf and petiole. Instead of the technique shown you can use your pruners to cut the leaf blades off but leave the petiole. I have seen it done both ways and both ways be successful. However, leaving on the petiole may lead to a higher take rate.

Tools used include the following:
Hand pruners
buddy tape
rubbing alcohol
paper towels

I know you have explained it at the beginning and the end of the video. What is the purpose of crafting, especially in this case you have chopped a 60 cm tree down to 25cm? Can't get my head around it. Thanks.

Can this be done in the fall or must you do in spring or summer?

Very informative. What is your source for rootstock? Do you grow your own from seeds or seedlings? How old do they have to be, to be used as rootstock?

Can you use a root stock from a red maple?

You should snip just the leaf off of the petioles. Leave the petiole. When the graft takes, the new buds will push the petioles off.

I would not trust the labels to much on japanese maples, You'd be surprised just how many are mislabeled. Went to a japanese maple society site and learned how to categorize Japanese maples. Next day at a garden centers site and half their maples were mislabeled
