10 Things To Do With Kids in NYC!
When visiting New York City with kids, it’s always a juggling act to keep them happy and engaged, while still having a rewarding trip in this amazing city for yourself. Sure, you can drag them in and out of museums and art galleries, but that won’t be much fun for either party. I have travelled to marvellous New York City with my kids a few times over the years and have come up with a list of sights and places that we both enjoyed a lot; in fact, they still talk about it regularly how much they loved our time in New York.
Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum: Housed on and in the historic Intrepid Aircraft Carrier, this impressive museum will keep everyone interested, as you can walk on deck and below deck exploring this massive ship. Also, on display is the Growler, a decommissioned submarine; a British Airways Concorde plane; and the Space Shuttle Enterprise, as well as a comprehensive aircraft collection.
Basketball: Enjoy a game at Madison Square Gardens, in the heart of Manhattan watching the New York Knicks. The atmosphere is electric, as New Yorker’s really love their basketball. The half time entertainment and t-shirt cannon were highlights for us.
Street Art Brooklyn: Something unique, is walking the streets of Brooklyn across the other side of the East River from Manhattan to admire the street art scene of Brooklyn. Massive murals as well as graffiti, make it an interesting place to visit. The neighbourhood of Bushwick in Brooklyn is one of the most popular areas with colourful and meaningful street art.
The Ride: A unique theatrical experience bus tour through the city, highly entertaining, full of gags and excitement. The bus is custom designed, with all seats facing sideways with a wall of glass, giving the best views out the windows. The Ride guides are full on entertainers, giving a hilarious 75-minute tour of the city.
Madam Tussauds New York: Located just off Times Square, kids will love it as they can see some of their favourite stars in person - well, a wax version at least! Madam Tussauds in New York is split into different areas to showcase the different wax works, such as superheroes, movie stars, celebrities, and sports stars.
Museum of Ice Cream: This colorful, crazy fun museum is a must visit in New York for families and your kids will love you forever. Think – free ice cream, 13 multi-sensory installations, a pool to jump in (not filled with water luckily) and NYC’s highest indoor slide. The team at the Museum of Ice Cream are super fun and engaging, making it a great experience.
Little Island at Pier 55: An artificial island garden that juts out into the Hudson River on the westside of Manhattan. Built on a set of unique white pylons, this lush oasis in the city is a great place just to relax for an hour away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Nearby is the trendy Chelsea Markets, great to grab breakfast or lunch, before you walk the Highline to Hudson Yards.
Hudson Yards: One of the largest urban developments in America, the Hudson Yards offers a few very interesting things to do with kids. Firstly, visit The Edge, an observation deck 100 floors up to get wonderful views of the city from above, it has a glass floor the kids will love. Next up is the 'Vessel', a public landmark and iconic structure of landings and staircases, it’s something completely different that’s for sure.
The Color Factory NYC: An interactive art museum located in Soho, full of immersive interactive installations to inspire and entertain. There is a massive ball pit to play in (adults welcome of course), silent disco to dance and plenty of free snacks, this place was super cool and lots of fun.
Circle Line Cruises New York: They offer a while variety of cruises of the Hudson and East River as well as to the Statue of Liberty. We took the Best of NYC 2 ½ hour cruises, offering the highlights of Manhattan and Lady Liberty. The views from the water were stunning, specially of Lowe Manhattan and under the Brooklyn Bridge. You can sit inside or enjoy the fresh air up on deck.
