Open Channel

Показать описание
Open Channels are drainage ditches that have been modified by adding floodplain benches within the overall channel. These benches mimic a natural floodplain zone. During high flows caused by storms or runoff, constructed floodplains allow water to spread out and slow down leading to greater channel stability. This video explores how Mike Long implemented this practice on his land in Warsaw, Indiana.
Major benefits of this practice include:
• Improves water quality
• Reduces maintenance cost
• Improves soil health
• Stabilizes stream banks
• Reduces nutrient and sediment release
The Conservation at Work video series was created to increase producer awareness of common conservation practices and was filmed at various locations throughout the country. Because conservation plans are specific to the unique resource needs on each farm and also soil type, weather conditions, etc., these videos were designed to serve as a general guide to the benefits of soil and water conservation and landowners should contact their local USDA office for individual consultation.
