Blacksmithing - Making Tongs Without Tongs (A Beginner Project)

With this video I want to show how you can forge your own first pair of blacksmithing tongs, by hand, with basic tools only. A perfect project for someone starting out, who has gathered the basic setup with a forge, anvil, vice and hammers. No tongs needed! I would almost argue this should be your very first project. Tongs are essential, even for the beginner projects like hooks and such.

I used to teach metalworking at a scout winter camp and being winter, I opted to do a blacksmithing version (BSA allows you to teach metalworking with soft metals like copper and brass, sheet metals, or blacksmithing and the blacksmithing version is rather rare). I brought all of my tools but at the time only had about 4 pairs of tongs but seeing as how I made 4 dirtbox forges for the camp to keep and plus my coal forge, I was still short by each forge having a set of tongs. So at the begining of class on the first day, I demostrated making a pair of tongs out of some scrap rebar for the kids. One set of brother were extremely enamored with blacksmithing and became my best students, they absorbed everything I could teach and asked me some questions I had to look up and brought their dad to class who became just as enamored. So after the class was over at the last lesson, I gave the brothers the tongs with the condidtion that they pay it forward, teach someone else about blacksmithing and give them a hard to get tool to help them along thier way. A few weeks later, I get a bunch of pics on my phone from their dad showing their new forge setup with a propane forge, a new anvil and everything. Their dad said the boys were in the shop every day after school and chores working on projects.

Great format. Very educational and straight to the point. No silly music or unnecessary commentary. Keep up the great work.

my late grandfather was a metal craftsman. he did not only blacksmithing but also invented quite a lot of things, such as the first generation of dim sum steamer-trolley in Hong Kong used at restaurants. I grew up spending a lot of time at his workshop. I was fascinated by his works though I was very young. as a girl, he never passed any of his knowledge to me. I had very little experience with metal works. yet, watching your videos gives me warmth, comfort, happiness, really, lots of joy! not only your skill with metal is totally impressive, your videos are always the best and getting more astonishing as time goes by! absolutely inspirational. thank you! ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏 Mr Ahman, thank you! 😊

Man, this is like blacksmith inception — forging the tool you need to forge other tools! I’ve been wanting to get into blacksmithing and this video made it feel possible. Thanks for making it beginner-friendly without dumbing it down.

As a log time viewer I have seen you make lots of tools. It would make a nice series seeing you make the basic tools a beginner needs.

watching this video reminds me of a quote from one of Terry Prattchett's books... A dwarf with a hammer and anvil can make some basic tools. A dwarf with basic tools can make more advanced tools. A dwarf with advanced tolls can make pretty much anything. 😄

Do much work (recently) with bloom iron? I would love to see a "making an iron hammer without an iron hammer" Working a hot bloom of iron with castable copper or bronze (or even wood/stone!) would be a worthy challenge that I would appreciate seeing someone with your experience tackle! (Plus you've got the tongs video, a hammer is the next logical step.) Anyone else? Gimme a thumbs-up
