DIY pond filter system| How it all works

Filtering a pond is actually quite easy. There are two main filters that will make owning a pond a breeze. A biological filter and a mechanical filter. In this video i show two different ponds using these two filters. The difference is one pond uses professional grade aquascape inc pond filters and the other uses DIY pond filters. Both ponds work great, look great and i love them both. But one cost me substantially less and a good chunk of that change came from the filter system.

1:25 are we really not talking about that tail slowly hiding itself?

Great video Kev. Looking forward to seeing the dream pond update when you have the rest of the rocks.

Although I’m working it out for my own pond, some people might find a video about pond dimensions handy, in terms of not only the depth of the shelves for plants but also the width of shelves allowing for the size of the rocks going into it, which reduces the width of the water area when completed. You’ve certainly touched on it in other videos, but a dedicated one might help people. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for this video, it has given me a great idea ... I need to make my pond, formerly a fiberglass swimming pool, look more like a pond. I'll get a few of these for the internal bench seat and then pile up rocks on it, creating caves for fish, a little waterfall, and another exit for the frogs, which will hide the bright blue pool colouring on the side. I won't ever want to change it back to a pool, but someone else may want to do it in the future, so I don't want to do damage to the pool lining just in case. Oh, and I put in a heap of impatiens on the weekend too!

New to your channel, what a find! The budget pond is stunning! I'm in the process of revamping a bog filter I put on a raised pond a few years ago, made lots of mistakes at the time but it still works great, just maintenance is a massive pain!

I could not swim anymore due to on the job Serious injury, could not maintain my pool therefore I dumped a bunch of goldfish to take care of the mosquitoes, before I know it it turned into a 14-year aquaponic hydroponic project, filtration was a challenge, one of the effective systems that I use was the citrus seedling bag, it is a Garden Plant Fruit Protect Drawstring Net Mesh Bag Against Insect Pest, I purchased 3 ft large bags from Echo North Fort Myers in which I modified into a filter after the pump discharge pipe into the settlement barrels, it did a fantastic job .

Kev, hi! Very cool video! You explain the matter very simply and clearly. For example, I live in Russia and there are a lot of people building their own ponds. But very few people understand these simple things. Often people suffer with huge purchased filters, spend a lot of money and do not get good water quality. I'm even thinking of translating the subtitles for your video into Russian))

I'm waiting for a new video about your dream pond. How's it going?

Very very nice video. U have great knowledge about ecosystem ponds.etc. Sir i learn a lot from you. Sir it will be great if you make video on correct edge treatment of garden ponds so that soil dont goes in at the time of rains. And linear is not exposed. Thank you sir.

Hey sorry if this a stupid question, but let's say using this system I was to create a natural pool, would that be unsafe for me to dip in? I know some water holes carry the risk of bacteria that can sometimes be fatal - so any way around creating one that is safe enough for dips? Thanks

Great video Kev, but I noticed there was some sort of evil slug worm inside your mechanical pump at 1:10, just thought i'd mention it in case it tries to kill your fish and/or take over the world.

Hey Kev, love your videos, i keep watching them over again for ideas. I have an existing pond i am going to add a bog to it for filtration, I think ill have to partition part of the existing pond and try and make it look natural or the other idea is a to use a rain tank - What are your thoughts on a bog filter in a 500L or 100L raintank? I can't find anywhere online where this hasd been done before.

I really love your videos. Do you have any showing how to use the gutter water from house for the pond?

Was that a lizard tail at 1:15 in the skimmer box?

How important are bottom drains? I keep hearing that they are a necessity. I am doing bog and skimmer. Love the videos

HI Kev. Just a quick question about the bog filter. You start with big rocks and move up the barrel with smaller rocks. How do you keep the smaller rocks from falling to the bottom of the barrel? Would they clog up the filter? I think that's what I'm trying to ask. I've built a bog filter but I'm still working on how to make it work the best way possible. I'm also thinking of putting the overflow pipe on the 1st barrel into a 2nd barrel using sand in the 2nd barrel before moving the water back into the pond. Ducks make a lot of muck and I want the return water to be as filtered as possible. I will also incorporate a skimmer.

Your videos have inspired me to get a wine barrel pond going.
Do you have any recommendations for fish that could withstand a canberra winter?
