Well, let me first tell you the most important aspect, the x factor, the most unlikely hero of the saviour of these two legendary British Brands, India, well not the country India but Indian Brands either controlling the entire company or partially having a stake in the Brand. Obviously this is not the first time this has occurred, One of the most famous example is Tata taking over Jaguar and Land Rover.

Now back to the topic, a theoretical comparison between the Worlds oldest Bike Brand, i.e the Royal Enfield, Yes just in case you all did not know, RE is older than Harley Davidson, and her worthy competitor, the phonex that has just been risen from the Ashes, the BSA.

Lets start with their ownership:-

BSA is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Classic Legends Private Limited (CLPL) which in turn is a subsidiary company of M&M.

Royal Enfield was initially Licensed to Indian Madras Motors, after the British Left India, It is now a subsidiary of Eicher Motors Limited.

Now the heart

The new Gold Star 650 gets a 652cc engine which is a liquid-cooled, DOHC, four-valve unit responsible for delivering 45hp of maximum power at 6,000rpm and 55Nm of peak torque at 4,000rpm. BSA has specifically mentioned that the engine is detuned to 45hp, she will be able to produce more power, and variants in the future would have an engine that would have unleashed the engines full potential.

The BSA Goldstar's 648cc Parallel-twin, 4-stroke, single overhead cam, air/oil-cooled, fuel-injected engine. This unit is responsible for delivering 47 bhp of maximum power at 7,150 rpm and 52 Nm of peak torque at 5250 rpm. Valve Per Cylinder4

The BSA Gold Star produces torque as low as 1,800rpm, delivering a healthy flow throughout the rev range and resulting in effortless cruising and bursts of acceleration when needed.

We have personally ridden the Royal Enfield 650 extensively, and can positively mention that torque produced by this engine is also way low in the rpm range.

Both these engines are focused on low and mid range torque, for the feel of a classic British bike, rather than the burst of power that is categorised by Japanese bikes.

The BSA Gold Star uses a 5 speed gear box, while the RE uses a 6 speed.

Both these bikes are built to reach the tone mark, i.e, top speed exceeding 160 kmph.

The motorcycle rides on 18-inch front wheel wrapped with 18/90 section Pirelli Phantom tyre and 17-inch rear wheel shod with 150/70 Pirelli Phantom Sports comp tyre

The BSA Gold Star uses tubular steel, a dual-cradle frame and a 41mm telescopic fork and twin shock absorbers for suspension.

The Royal Enfield 650 also uses a tubular steel frame, while its suspension kit includes 41 mm front fork, 110 mm travel and Twin coil-over shocks with 88 mm travel in the rear.

Gold star 320mm disc in the front and Brembo two piston floating calipers along with 255mm disc at the rear

Continental dual channel ABS is offered as standard.

Front Brake Diameter320 mm Rear Brake Diameter240 mm
In terms of appearance and details the BSA definitely looks the part, she looks like a bike that has just come out of the manufacturing from the 1960’s.

Everything from the way the engine looks to the instrument panel. They have done a commendable job of fusing the 1960’s with the technology of 2021, and I mean only the basic technology to make the bike road legal, like ABS and FI.

The Enfield too looks old school, but not as close to the way BSA flaunts their vintage heritage.
Gold star - 12 litres and tips the scales at 213kg.

RE - fuel capacity and weight stands at 13.7 litres and 202 kg,

Both of these Motorcycles look truly superb. To choose between the two is a difficult decision for any modern retro enthusiast. After test riding the RE I was hooked…it is everything you want in a cool looking bike & does it with style…
If the cost of the new BSA Goldstar is similar to that of the Royal Enfield Interceptor then owning both would be the logical choice (budget permitting).
These are both plenty powerful (even if a more powerful version of the BSA is produced in the future). If you are needing more than 45 to 47 bhp, (which is more than adequate to put a smile on your face whilst easily capable for motorways) then these bikes are really not for you! Get yourself a superbike!!
These Motorcycles look amazing & I cannot wait to give the BSA a test ride when they arrive. 👊😎👍
Great impartial video. Thank you.

I love the way that Royal Enfield are sweeping under the carpet that the 120 plus years of production is definitely not continuous. After Royal Enfield closed in England at the end of the MK2 Interceptor at Upper Westwood tunnels (1970) there was a gap as Royal Enfield and Enfield India Madras were two separate companies. Enfield India was just a company producing bikes under licence and did not own the Royal Enfield name just a licence agreement to manufacture early style Bullets not the last type produced in the UK. The Royal Enfield name is also still thought to be owned by Aerco and not legitimately by Eisher. The bikes made in India had Enfield of the manufacturer plate not Royal Enfield this appeared in the mid 90s and this is still in question with some over rights. Yes Enfield have been around but not continuous for 120 years under the Royal Enfield banner.

Good video. Thank you.
Ready to choose one of these two.
Started riding in 1985 aged 16 and stopped in 2016 after cancer and divorce.
These two tempted me back to two wheels after a shitty period and my first new bike since a Yamaha RD350LC YPVS in September 1987.
I don't care a damn if they're fast or not at this point in life. I'll choose after a good test ride on both.

Until I hear one running I wont even believe the bikes will be produced. For all we know the show models could be just mock ups.

I have been a BSA fan all my life; I am 66 now. When I first saw it I said I want one, but if they are going to produce a more powerful one later in the future; why buy the first model? I now think I will wait until either they are produced or an American company like S&S get their hands on one. It will be a bigger bore and hotter cam etc. It is a mistake to market the first models as a lower powered model. It’s simply not good marketing to tell people that you will produce a better model in the future, but we will sell you an inferior model at the launch. Maybe the Indians don’t understand how the west and true motorcyclists think. Produce the most powerful first; as did the Japanese and then refine or detune it.

Thank you for a detailed review on these outstanding bikes. They are legends in our time. Blessings to you and Family 🙏.

At least the Interceptor is a proven and modern design. Only time will tell if the BSA lives up to the hype.

Single cylinder engine on BSA is the dealbreaker for me even though some may feel the expectedly viby engine ‘more characterful’ than the twin cylinder engine on the Enfield.

The BSA looks nice but why call it a gold star when it's definitely not. Compare. And That massive radiator ?

Nice review! Will follow with interest as RE and now BSA make a comeback with the introduction of some nice retro classic bikes. In the meantime I'll keep riding my W800.

Ach! Will I ever be so satisfied with their specs as to start selling things to own one? I won't be happy until they're as light as the originals. Also, a NO electric start option. The electric start was one of the first things I removed as a young man with my used Nortons and Triumphs. Today, with the addition of an air-light battery you can lose another 15 pounds that way! They are really getting close!

Quite different bikes. Look at the rake figure on the BSA it’s not going to turn as sweetly as the Enfield and the single probably isn’t going to be all that unique looking as it is a derivative of the Rotax single made for BMW years ago.
