The electoral college was designed to give smaller states a same chance to participate in the presidential election. The total population of the US is about 346 million people, so the median is about 173 million. However, the top 10 states have a combination population of about 182 million. Meaning that if the election is decided by popular votes, a candidate can, theoretically, campaign in only the top 10 states and ignore the other 40 states. The electoral college gives each state a leverage in the electoral process no matter how small it is. It’s a true form of democracy, where the minority still has a stake, instead of having the majority dictates how the government is elected and functions.
