Great video and idea! You can also use that fly line backing as a "level line". That's my preferred line type. It's an in-between option for standard level line and that pvc option. A little heavier than level line, but not saggy like pvc can be. I like it when I use a setup like a hopper/dropper.

This is the set up I use to teach the scouts in the Fly Fishing merit badge... It seems easier for them to learn to cast the level 2 and 3 wt level fly line than a lighter fluorocarbon fly line. I tie a 6 inch piece of 8# teat mono to the fly line with a nail knot and a loop in the other end. I attach about 3 feet of 4# test mono with a Loop to Loop knot to form my leader. Kids are pretty hard on "leaders" when learning to cast and while fishing ... having the loop to loop connection makes it quick and easy to switch a new leader for ones filled with wind knots. LOL. Good video.

Good stuff! I've been using a similar setup with some of my stiffer tenkara rods. I found running lines in .026in (.66mm) and .032in (.81mm) that work with my rods. The .026in is the most versatile in longer lengths (longer than the rod) and I use the .032in on rod length or shorter lines, because it loads the rod easier and it is great for casting hopper-dropper setups and in windy conditions. I still like size #3, 3.5 or 4 fluoro lines with my light action rods.

Excellent modification. I usually use level line like most tenkara anglers. But I might give a try this line system. This is so simple which is great in unexpected situation, like sudden rain, wind or cold season which the fingers don’t corporate.

Tenkara es la técnica perfecta para río de montaña la cual permite pescar sigilosamente a variadas profundidades con una misma línea e incluso con una misma mosca y para nada se requieren líneas flotantes como en el western style. La clave es APRENDER la técnica

Couple of questions:
Have you tried going directly to tippet from the floating line?
I'll be looking to use 5x tippet.
Edited after re watching video and question answered ;)

Thanks for the video, it was just what I was looking for!

Could you use the colourful fly line backing as a furled leader?

Hello . Je suis français et pêche au tenkara comme vous. Je voulais savoir d'où vient votre canne et quelle longueur fait elle ???
Merci pour vos réponses.

Just heard about Tenkara fishing and have been contemplating this very idea of adapting some Western line techniques for windy conditions. Really happy this popped up on my feed. So maybe I’m not nutz. Would like to see a follow up video on how it’s working and what you’ve learned and any adjustments. Thanks!!

Why do you put a tippet ring at the end of the tippet? Thanks.

This is a great idea. I've and some line by fureling braid and seems to work well. But this is much simpler thanks for sharing.

... try doing a half a rod length leader off a 24ft rod...
Aside from that, great info.

2 questions....you only tied the tippet side of the nail knot. Are you relying on the knot staying tight by squeezing onto the floating line? And whats the purpose of the tippet ring? Don't you just tie the fly to the tippet?

Great video by the way
I just read the other comments and the answer to question 2 is that the tippet ring is on the leader, not the tippet.

It would be nice to see how you attached the backing loop to the rod-end of the level line. I wasn`t able to see it clearly.
