Taksim Squre name was given to this place by the sultan Mehmet-I due to its function. It was the main water channel from where water was distributed to northern city water channels.In Byzantine period there had been a wall dividing Muslim and non Muslim population.

On the western side of independence monument, there is a newly built Taksim Mosque. The independence monument is also situated at taksim square. it was designed by Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica. the monument was completed and opened for public in 1928. It consists of bronze figures in marble structure symbolizing the independence of Turkey in 1923. Total height of the monument is 11 meters.
On the Eastern side of this area is famous ghazi park. Ghazi Park was constructed after demolishing ottoman period’s Army barracks
One the southern side of taskim square, istiklal street or Istaklal Street begins . Street is famous place for food and shopping areas.
Hagia Triada, a greak orthodox church is also in Istiklal street.
