I Spent 7 Days in The Most Controversial Cabin at Sea

Normally if you take a cruise in a balcony cabin you can look forward to views of the ocean and the ports that you’ll be visiting. That is not what happened on my last cruise though because I stayed in what is called a ‘conservatory mini suite’ which although it did have a balcony, it had no clear view of the ocean. It is one of the most controversial cabins at sea and definitely the strangest cabins I’ve ever had, I saw some weird things frim here too.

There are plenty of videos and reviews online that warn others not to stay in the cabin but because I had booked what is called a ‘guaranteed’ cabin I was automatically assigned the room. Usually when you book a guaranteed cabin you get assigned the leftover cabins and I did wonder if that was what happened here.

Still, I was very happy with the cabin I was assigned. Cabin 8304 on deck 8, it’s the deck 8 cabins that are the controversial ones. On P&Os website the conservatory suites look amazing and it looks as though they have clear views of the ocean but I knew from looking at the deck plans that there would be a promenade deck between our cabin and the sea. The conservatory cabins are some of the most expensive cabins on the ship so I was looking forward to find out out what, if anything, made them worth the price.

I was sharing the cabin with two other adults so was looking forward to the extra space in the cabin over a standard balcony cabin and I’d heard that there were a few extra perks that came with the room too. I could never have predicted the perks that showed up, but more about that later.

Looking at the deck plans I noticed that we were located by the stairs and also that there was a whirlpool outside the cabins balcony. I’ve never had to think about noise from beyond the balcony before but I did wonder if this would be a problem. I didn’t want to be constantly bothered by the noise of people on the deck and I knew that there were over 900 children onboard because this cruise was during the school holidays.

When we embarked the ship we walked into this huge atrium on deck 6 and went up the staircases to deck 8 to find out room. Having a cabin on deck 8 did turn out to be a big benefit as most of the restaurants and lounges are on decks 6 7 and 8. I wondered if the walk up to deck 16 to the buffet would get difficult, but I’d test that a lot of times during the cruise.

My first impression of the cabin were very good, I loved the design and although it felt a little thinner than some other cabins I’ve stayed in it felt spacious and bright. The ship was launched in 2020, just before the pandemic which in hindsight wasn’t great timing but for a cruise ship that makes her pretty new. The sofabed to my right would become my bed for the cruise so I hoped that this would be comfortable. It’s more common for kids than adults to stay on these sofa beds so I hoped that it would be designed for somebody like me too.

There are some YouTubers who have it and some that don't, Emma you have a natural talent for this medium. Your positivity in a industry that has so many negative nellies is refreshing. You don't over sell hype, you don't do gimmicks and flashy "look at me skits"...just Emma and a Cruise. Love it! Please never chase the comments, stay as you.

As an introvert, this cabin is my worst nightmare 😂

The moment you mentioned the whirlpools I knew you would leave traumatized 😂 I’m sorry you had that happen but I’m glad I got to laugh along with you about it!

The slow-draining shower may be intentional. If the water is backing up you'll cut the shower short, thus saving water. Subtle but effective.

I really like the conservatory addition, seems like a nice space to give your cabin buddy some privacy and have some space to yourself if you need it! (Because as much as I love going on trips with friends/family, eventually you need a break from one another). I'd prefer one without the promenade deck being right there, though

Oh my word... I would have been giggling hysterically at the noises from the whirlpool like an immature school girl!!! Awkward was definitely accurate!

OMG! My dad would freaking love that cabin… he’d spend the whole trip holding court out on the balcony lol

In Germany a conservatory is called "Wintergarten", and this translates exactly to what you think it means, because you can sit in your garden during winter. German is a very effektiv language, where words often just driscribe what they mean 😂

What happens in the whirlpool... is known by everyone, apparently.

How on earth does Emma stay in shape with all this cruising?!? She must be very disciplined.

You are right, a garden gate to the promenade would be perfect. I actually think that cabin looks like fun, like sitting on a front porch and seeing folks walk by.

My husband loves talking to anyone and everyone. I could see him standing out there chatting for the whole cruise!

This is a really weird tip, but for any shower that's slow to drain in the future, if it has the detachable shower head you can put it on whatever the highest pressure setting it and aim it into the drain area for 30-60 seconds while moving it side to side a bit and it may help keep the drain clear! My in law's drain does this and it worked well there with repeat treatments every 4-5 days.

Well, it sure sounded like someone was having a whirl while getting hot and heavy in the tub pool. I actually liked that cabin layout. It was pretty nice. I think you could snooze in the conservatory if you wanted to. Have to admit that deck nine cabins have a few more benefits but they may not come with large cookies. It appears Captain Hudson approved.

That editing note was hilarious. People actually do that in a whirlpool on a cruise??? Lol😂

These cabins would be great if you could access the promenade directly.

There is a tradition in my area (Western Pennsylvania) called a "cookie table" at weddings. Wedding cake is served, but you MUST also have a cookie table. And make sure there are enough for guests to take some home as well. We had over 3, 200 cookies at my daughter's wedding. Friends and relatives chip in to make them all!

Went on a Canary Island cruise January 2022. We had a conservatory mini-suite. Cabin no 9616 (if memory hasn't failed me) above the food court.
Given the smaller cabin size, I was really pleased we had the extra space to sit in although, It was not warm enough on our cruise to fully open up the doors. We didn't hear any disruptive noises from the cafe's outside seating area below unless we stood out on the balcony.
Deck 9 overlooks the promenade, and having walked the promenade, I do not think there is a direct view into these cabins, so no real worry for cruisers' privacy.

Love the cabin review Emma!! Captain Hudson is so cute hiding in all the nooks and crannies inside your cabin! Can’t wait to receive my very own captain Hudson 😻😻😻
