Kamila Valieva was the favourite for gold in the women's singles at the Beijing Olympics.
During the short program on 15 February, she placed first ahead of teammate Shcherbakova in spite of faltering during a triple axel though not falling.
As the mistakes mounted and the falls came, the crowd cheered her on and applauded the moves she did complete.
Valieva choked back tears after the music to her program, "Bolero" by Maurice Ravel, stopped playing.
She finished in fourth place in the women's individual figure skating event with 224.09 points.
