Have you ever heard a kick drum that’s so unique, so unpredictable, so… incredible, that you’ve wanted to fight someone? That might sound a little intense, but that’s exactly what happened when J Dilla was producing the song “Runnin’” by The Pharcyde in 1995.

J Dilla is the greatest producer of all time no question. the fact that 29 of the 31 tracks on Donuts was produced in the hospital with an SP-100 is just unbelievable to even imagine. That seals it for me.

I've been digging into hip-hop history for a while now, but you're contextualizing it in a way that's accessible and engaging. I appreciate you man. Keep it up!!

Fun fact: "Saudade vem correndo" means something like "the missing feeling (from someone) comes running". This translation is hard to do because saudade does not have an accurate translation. The fun fact, is that "correndo" means "Running". Source: I'm brazilian.

As a fellow hip-hop channel owner and as a fan, I have to give you much respect on the content you make. The humor, the stories, the research. It's all super dialed in. Your success is well earned!

I've used YouTube as my primary entertainment platform for something like 8 years, have subscribed to well over 100 channels. Yours is the first that made me think "Let me hit that notification bell. I'd hate to miss even _one_ upload"

I’m so glad we have someone technically breaking down Dillas work in such a professional series. I’m just now finishing his entire production discog, and I can’t wait to start trying to reprod some of these. Hope there’s many more to come!

What a loss, he was only 32.. I honestly believe that hip hop and rnb today would sound much different if he was still alive.

Great storytelling as always! Sidenote: was suprised to read in Dilla Time that T3 was the one who "discovered" the Stan Getz & Luiz Bonfa loop used in "Runnin". Definitely deserves some credit for that! 🙌

My guy, this is great content. Your soulquarians video got me to subscribe but every video is mind blowing to me. I have a lot of respect for what you do here. Thanks for it.

What y’all don’t understand and Refuse to understand is that it was played by feeling not by technicality. It’s like dancing y’all could learn the basic steps but to switch up is to feel the rhythm and improvise. I can break down everyone’s style beat nuts, large pro, premier, tip learning the equipment is one thing but you must also have an imagination.

So much Dilla Time material ;) but damn if you don’t a fantastic job presenting it, easily one of the best things on YouTube about hip hop.
