They really did strip away most of the sub-plots and dumb everything down a few orders of magnitude. They simplified every character and their motivations while trying to make us root for the characters played by popular actors. Im glad I saw the show first, honestly, cause if I had read the books and then seen the show it would have been unwatchable. I dont know how GRRM has kept his cool with talentless hacks destroying his story.
