In the original plot, Gizmo was also going to turn into a Gremlin, Stripe specifically, and the movie would end with Billy killing an evil version of his former pet. Best writing decision ever to keep Gizmo an innocent Mogwai even though they had trouble with the Gizmo puppet as it broke down constantly due to the fact it was never intended to be used that long.
