How to Build a Closet System--{Drawers, Cubbies, & Belt/Tie Rack!}

In this video, I’ll show you how to build your own built in (or stand alone, if you prefer) DIY Closet System!

And find the printable plans with cut list and plywood cut diagram here:

Now, I know the video shows this DIY closet system standing on its own–and that’s definitely a possibility. This piece can stand alone in a room.

But it was actually designed to fit into a nook in a friend’s house that just needed some extra storage space. The nook was 4 ft wide, 2 ft deep, and 8 ft tall. So I built this piece slightly smaller to give some wiggle room to avoid issues during installation.

The overall size here is 47" wide, 20" deep, and 7 ft tall.

I'm a 53 yo woman without the knowledge and without the tools. You make me want to build. You are doing an awesome job.

Hey Shara, just wanted to thank you and to say that I’ve learnt a lot from you. I’m a father of boys here and started following you last year during our lockdown. After seeing your video with Steve R, I realised how stressful yet brave you are to put up with all the scrutiny that YouTube viewers can be sometimes. I love how simple your videos are as I find them all relatable given I’m just a simple DIYer. I hope you find a way to always keep it simple and love your attitude of how just enough is good enough. Will definitely be following how you did this piece as I’m hoping to build a similar shelving for the wife. Sending as much positivity your way all the way from the other side of the world here in New Zealand. Absolutely love your work. 👍🏼

Thank you. The drawer guide on your website has really helped; I'm currently building my girlfriend a dresser and your guide about drawers has really helped.
I've subbed and liked the video. So much appreciated.

Like how you address your boo boos. Fixing after the fact is handy when we go from brain to build. Puttering with wood is a new joy to me.

You're rapidly approaching 80k subs...100k is just around the corner! I like the use of dowels. Strong, inexpensive and easy.

This is great. It’s big. But like you said… breaking it down into multiple projects makes it seem more manageable

I am glad to see someone else modifies and improves their design on the fly. Good on you. Great end result. I am a WWMM crossover.

Alright! The rain boots are back and may I say that you look dashing in them, as you always do.
This is a visually appealing cabinet and a creative design.
Thanks for sharing it with us.

What an elegantly simple and functional piece! Hey, if you get your ply from a big-box store (like I have to), that stuff will bow on you no matter what. I've learned the hard way to do what you did - hide extra bracing in inconspicuous places to keep it true and square. Well done!

You made it look so simple, and the size is probably added complexity to it. Nice build.

WOW! I love the way you used basic techniques over and over again to evolve into a really complex but functional piece of furniture.Great job! Thanks for sharing.

Excellent work and explanation. Product is better built, better looking and looks easier than any kd kits I've seen.
(And I've seen a lot, as a semi-retired furniture maker & repair guy, people ask me to assemble kits all the time.)

Wow, Wow, Wow....I love the design and final outcome of the project. You were able to create a good looking well balance design between the three elements of drawers, cubies, and vertical storage box. You are a Design Diva!

The slide out tie rack is a very nice touch for easy access.

I watched your talk with Steve and now I am an even bigger fan of yours. I hope you do decide to build your own house. And if you film it, that would be just awesome. Best of luck to you and your family :)

Long time follower and commenter here and I was so excited to see you on WWMM video! He’s my other favorite woodworker and you guys touched on a point that I felt to be the whole reason I watch and love you both. You both do the type of real world, practical woodworking that I feel is achievable for most hobbyists and semi-professional woodworkers. You don’t get fancy but you produce really nice results. And let’s be clear… you do REAL WOODWORKING! Hoping you’ll get that silver play button soon!
