The river water currents are like moving walkways in an airport, it's a way to shrink the map which was too big after 7.33 patch. Now you can "hitch a ride" and get to places noticeably faster than before. I think this is just a a test run, they can always add more rivers/inlets, change the direction of the current flow, etc. to make the map more dynamic. Very cool change.
